I got a Fiat Coupe 20V Turbo - they were the worlds fastest ever production FWD car (going to now be the Alfa 156 GTA I think). I think they are the best FWD car, but only with modded suspension, or the Fiat option (that not many people actually took)
220BHP/ 229lbs/ft torque as standard our of the front wheels, easy mods make it more like 280BHP/ 280lbs/ft.
The ITR outhandles it marginally even with the aftermarket suspension, but put the handling, performance and looks together and not a lot comes close even in 4WD

1. Spoon Integra Type-R (some of these had 14000 rpm rev limits!)
2. Dodge (basically Mitsubishi) Stealth ES V-6 (a 3.0 with massive torque steer and a heavy car as well, but faster than stink.)
3. Focus SVT (180bhp in US trim makes it a faster and better handling car than any US-sold stock I4 fwd out there)
4. 1983 VW Rabbit GTi (slower than snot, but sticks to the tarmac as well as a Porsche)

If we talk just handling, not power.....
1 - ITR MY02
2 - Mini MY02 (with 17" and SS+ options)
3 - ITR & CTR of old
4 - 306 Rally / Gti
5 - various Alfas (33s, 155s, 156s)
That's based on my driving experiences.

Based purly on handling and not power/speed, I would vote for the Ford Focus Zetec ESP.
The feel and road holding is far superior to the 306gti/XSi. All three I've driven for long periods.
The Focus ST170 and RS's should be cracking FWD cars when they finally come out. The ST170 will be a good rival to the Civic Type R crowd, the RS may struggle with its price tag though.

The Corrado VR6 gets my vote(just ahead of the Integra R).I wish my Impreza handled as well as my old Corrado. You could really attack corners, there was non of this, slow in, fast out cr*p,like in the Impreza. The linear normally aspirated engine helped to make it so controlable at the limit, and the chassis allowed you to choose from serious lift off oversteer to mild understeer or any thing in between.Awesome
To me it is a grown up version of the Integra type R

Clio Williams 3 - had one before the Scoob, amazing handling and pretty good pace (tuned to 190bhp). Still miss it at times, very predictable lift off oversteer
Many tried to keep up round the twisties, most failed - apart from Imprezas, so that's what i bought next .
My 2p's worth

In my personal experience I would have the Peugeot 205 GTi 1.6 - unmodified with no power steering. Great little car - had a 115bhp, not much by Scoob standards but it made for a very quick car. Point to point it was supberb and the handling and feedback through the steering wheel was second to none.

306gti6 or 205 1.9.
Re the corrado & uk scoob (just for a bit of balance ) - never had a problem showing them my heals when the car was standard.
Not a bad motor though

got a puma and I rate the way they handle I can get it into most situations and get away with it had a few full opposite lock moments and lived to tell the tale but keeps me awake i s'pose reckon on a country lane you may be able to keep with an impreza but sadly never had chance all the ones I see are driven like girls

Before the RB5, I had a 170bhp Lotus Elan. In the dry the handling of the Elan was far superior to that of the RB (IMHO)but in the wet you needed great respect for the road. Top car though and I still miss those summer evenings !!!!!!!
