Thanks for the input and the mini-war guys
Still undecided here for the most part but I think more of his mates have the 360....I'll leave him to research a bit more before taking the plunge sometime at the start of December. If GT5 isn't going to be out for ages that means the PS3 will take a big hit on being the choice as that's one of the games he was looking forward to most.
Parental control is most definitely the off switch! I've just got him started on Photoshop to ween him off the console but some things never change!

360 is probably the more popular machine over here as it is in the US
Overall in terms of sales overall its 20 million to 360 and 15 million to PS3
Obviously many of those 360s are no longer in use as initially 68% were faulty - it's now down to 15% of those manufactured currently
Personally I've had three 360s and a repair but only 1 PS3 - bought both on their launches.
360 has a better online community, more games, cheaper games and more people in the UK own them so it's easier to find someone to play against / swap games with
PS3 is built better, has wifi built in, re-chargeable controllers in the box, online is free

Replaced/Repaired consoles wont reflect in sales figures. Even if 99% were faulty it would be the units manufactured figure affected, not the units sold.

I know that but I'm sure many people just went out and bought an Elite when their original one RROD'd
I don't have any preference for either just presenting the facts. The only thing I'd say is that if you like games you would be mad if you didn't buy a 360 considering how cheap they have just become.
I know you already have one Bob, that comment is for the OP.

Well, I suppose it is larger, and heavier, and made of tacky 70's hifi style shiny black plastic which attracts fingerprints and dust like nothing else. So I guess that must mean it is better made.
Personally, I don't carry mine around much, or feel the need to fondle it to determine the build quality, so I don't care

I think now 360 for back catalogue but longer term the PS3, if you're gonna get one see if you can get your hands on a 60gb one with backward compatibility with PS2 games, although I dont play many PS2 games on mine but its handy as my daughter has some PS2 titles she still plays on it.

360 hands down guys, then again im on my third now. After buying a new hd telly i bought the elite, so now have a full normal white 360 minus the hard drive (as now using hard drive on my elite) and one white 360 i bought spare incase i got the RR'sOD, which is just the unit, no cables. I also have a Wii and a PS3 which in all honesty i bought to play my gf's brother online with, as he used to come in and watch me playing cod4 online and thinking he was better than me, HA joker, lol. He hasn't beaten me yet. But only play cod4 on the ps3, xbox's are so much better, most of the faulty ones are out of retail now although on the elite i have i have had one strange error message once, which i then turned it off and haven't had it since.
But all in all, the 360 is better with its community, updates, demo's, films, yes u have to pay for the privalege but your getting proper quality, ps3's are incredibly easy to hack into especially people thinking they are clever downloading the games from japanese websites with different usernames on their's! oh so silly lol.
any cod4's for the 360 on here add me, ash002004

You will always get a biased opinion on this as more people own 360s.
For me its PS3 all the way!! Xbox dosent compare, i got rid of mine a few months of ps3 play
I know plenty of people who swapped there 360, due to 3 rings, other probs or just fancy a change and they all say the same..
The ps3 is superior!

That'd be why my PS3 gathers dust while my 360 gets used every day then

After watching this thread with some interest I've plumped for the 360 Elite. Have to say that choice of games alone the 360 wins hands down.
Just got last more than 2mins on COD4 now lol

Decision was taken but purchase not yet made -- he's going for the 360 because of the range of games and the fact that more of his mates are online with the 360 than with the PS3....now then, which variant of the 360? I know, he'll want the most expensive Thanks for all the input folks, it has made interesting reading

The white versions are alot cheaper now, and unless he has a high definition tv, a white version is the best bet. although you can still get HD with the white ones
Get an elite though if you like HDMI cables as you'll only be able to use it with a HDMI cable, so you'll need a HDTV with a HDMI connection.......go for my setup....Elite connect via HDMI to a 40" HD Samsung lol
Plus ive heard the elites arent as prone to dying as the white ones are

Ive been debating this for a few weeks now. I like the Xbox but they are very noisy - is that still the case with new ones?
Must admit the appeal of blu-ray is strong and I think MS dropped a bollock there. I borrowed my mates PS3 last weekend whilst he was away. GT5 prologue was naff - GRID on the PC blows that away IMHO. Battlefield BC demo was ok but gfx werent up to much.
Tbh Id probably still play FPS on the PC as just doesnt seem the same on a console. Leave the console for Fifa, beat em ups and a driving games. Little Big Planet is rather funny and Killzone 2 looks good but again FPS on console....
Only thing stopping me buying a PS3 at the mo is the price. Still £295 even with the 160gb release this month which is supposed to priced at £350. If anything they should have brought that in at £295 and dropped the 80gb to £250 or less to follow MS with the Xbox.

i know all that, but the tv i was using at the time only had a HDMI ocnnection...hence why i bought an elite
plus TBH ive found the elite to be much less noisy, it sounds smoother and get no whines, infact my pc running vista is the noisiest and drowns everything else out, lol, but the elite does sound smooth. Blu ray players arent that expensive to buy nowadays if u want the xbox and blue ray capability
and iv played battlefield bad company on both consoles and was honestly blown away by the graphics on the xbox console....and fps for pc??? what about cod4 on xbox!!!!!!!!!!! lol the best ever
Only thing i thinks bad about xbox, is that when i had a ps2 i absolutely LOVED killzone, what a brilliant game (never played it online though) but the story mode i think was wicked....and was a shame that they didnt bring it out on the 360 as i think they brought a new one out but was only for ps3? im not sure on that one but i do remember seeing trailers for a new game....
