Have you agreed on a salary yet? I hope not, as you may want to ensure you get the salary you want, PLUS super, at a compulsory 9% p/a. Basically add 10% to what you think you want to live on.

Living in Sydney is lke living in central London, expensive. Try to find somewhere to live (LOL, I laugh because you will not get much change out of $550 p/w, depending where and circumstances etc) near a train station, 'coz driving is expensive if you live along "toll ways".
Cheers dude well aware of all of that.

I didnt just wake up one morning and decide to go to Oz

Well you never mentioned Brisbane did you?

My sister in law lives in Brisbane and I visited in March.

Top place. I'd move there like a shot.

She has a 4 bedroom place. It's huge. Massive double garage, and a pool.

£180k.

I know sickening isn't it , we're going to rent for a couple of years get to know the area's and then sell up here and buy that big house with the pool

Where in Brizzy is your sister, we were last there in Feb/Mar, we stayed in Labrador (gold coast) at a friends place and up in Noosa Heads, that was lovely but a bit of a trek to Brisbane for the commute.

Funks, do you think you'll be inviting any Scoobynet mods to stay with you for a free holiday?

LOL that makes you the 137th person to ask, I'm not going to bother buying a house, it's a hotel I need

We're stopping off in Singapore for 3 days and the flight from Sin to Syd will be a Singapore Airlines A-380, I'd rather it had been in service a little longer than it has before I clambered on board, will be nice to have a look around the thing though, I never like taking off in the bigger aircraft they seem to take too long to get up in the air, that thing is going to amble down the runway

All personal experiences of course, and you may well be right, but I know I would regret it if I didn't take the offer, if it all goes Pete Tong then so be it we come home and start another adventure, you don't know until you try and after being in the same job since I was 17 I know I want a change, a big change, life is too short.

Cue the post in 2 years time where i'm moaning my **** off and im coming home

Despite the tales of woe from others that have done the same thing you'd kick yourself if you didn't take the opportunity. Life is all about grabbing the opportunities by the horns and taking them

So, about that free holiday....

LOL, that must be one heck of a good job as the way you go on in here I would have thought you'd be off abroad at the drop of a hat

Thumbs up

I departed the UK in 1981 after spending a year in Canada and finally settling in Oz. You will have to accept you will always be considered a pom here. The Aussies will always test our resolve -especially at cricket matches .
I'd rather be a Paki than a Pom jibe always rears its head at cricket matches . But other than a few exceptions poms are received pretty well. If not just remind em that the Sydney Harbour bridge was made in England -Dorman Long and erected in Oz also the Opera house was engineered in London at Ove Arup

I left the UK August 26th 2007 , We moved to just south of Calgary Canada , Yes its bloody cold in winter (-35 some days ) But we have just had a scorching summer and its still 24 c and looks set to continue, Last year it never really got cold till mid November and it was more or less over by February , But we got some great Skiing /Snowboarding in. It hardly ever rains and nearly every day its clear blue sky even in winter .

Far better lifestyle out here , so many things to do/see , far safer for the kids and were I live hardly any crime, even the teenagers hold doors open for you !

We have a massive 4 bedroom house on a lake community with views of the Rockies from our bedroom window, that we would never been able to afford in the UK.

Not missing the UK in the slightest as everything went downhill soon as we left and is only getting worse. No plans for a visit either.

I do miss Fish an Chips though

I've always fancied Canada, the only thing is the extremley cold winters but if only for 3 months or so then thats not too bad.

Plus if you live on the east coast i.e. Nova Scotia then its only 6-7 hours back on a plane to blighty

I took the plunge and moved to Toronto, Canada, in 2003.

For various reasons it wasn't for me, and I've never regretted moving back to Blighty in 2005.

However, Markus moved to Toronto and is still there.

Each to their own and all that, just remember the grass isn't always greener on the other side.

I found that many of the things that narked me about the UK where replaced by a different set of things that narked me in Canada.

Having said that, I'll never regret the experience and am glad I did it. If for no other reasons than I got the moving abroad bug out of my system and, more importantly, I appreciate the UK all the more now - warts and all.

Forgot to mention, in Australia, while you are a temporary resident you can claim back your medicare levy, which is about 1.5% of your salary, at tax time.

Work took me out of the UK years ago, don't miss the place one bit.

Whenever I go back to visit family & friends I can never wait to get out of the place and get home again!

Good luck with the move FM, hope it all works out for you
