You wouldn't necessarily see smoke etc. Depends how harshly it was rubbing.
If it's alignment causing this, you would also possibly smell it, and the car would drive like an absolute pig.
Was there any sign of rubbing last time you took the wheels off? How long ago was that? Did you swap them front- rear? Are the rears starting to look the same?
What tyre pressures are you running? The combination of low pressure and cheap tyres could result in the the rim causing the groove. What section are the tyres?
And finally, don't assume the -2 camber is caused by the car not being settled. If it had just been jacked up, and not settled, it would probably read positive, not negative. I know mine would!
Get the alignment done again, somewhere else, and settl the car by rolling it a couple of yards. A difference of 2deg in rear camber is plenty enough to make the car crab slightly, or make it pull to one side.
Best of British, mate,
Nick

Last time I took the wheels off was for the McRae gathering on August 30th, but I've checked the tyres since then and they were fine. No rubbing anywhere when the wheels were off - even now no signs of rubbing.
Rears are fine, only the fronts are doing this. I've also rotated the tyres regularly, too.
Tyre pressures in psi: 32 front, 30 rear.
I'm not sure there are any other places that do the full geometry close to me. I need a temporary set of tyres just so that I can get around cause the offside front could let go and I can't drive it much with the space saver.

So its actually gone like that in 3 and a half weeks? I would suggest its totally down to allignment and something has broken which is only affecting the geometry while the car is in motion or maybe under braking? Maybe a wishbone bush or bolt? There is something you can buy to check tracking which you actually drive over, I mean I wouldn't want my tracking set up with it but maybe It would highlight your problem as the car is actually in motion. I think its called Gunson trackrite.

Something may have come loose. How has it felt to drive? Any wierdness?
Cheers, Nick

Rang them up earlier but they can't see me until Monday. Was it you that went past the Audi/Toyota dealer at around 3:45-4pm? Heard this rumble and saw a white Impreza flash past.
Pressures were done using a hand held gauge. Car drove perfect, nothing wrong with it. Even now, no signs of rubbing and drives fine. I'm not sure whether fitting 4 new tyres will be the solution? What if the same happens to them? Then a minimum of £200 (2 tyres) wasted.
I could buy two Nankangs again and see if they wear the same? But I'd then have 2 slightly worn tyres and 2 brand new ones - not diff friendly. I wouldn't really buy cheap tyres but this would be a little bit of an 'experiment.'

I know all about the purple R, I've been following your build on 22B.com.
More pics of the rest of the tyres....
Left rear put on front:
Rollin' on dubs!
Strut clearance on front right:
Jeeze, I need to clean the arches again!
Front right pics:
As you can see, shaping up exactly the same as the other front (busted) tyre.
Right rear:
Left rear (which is now on the front):
As the pics show, nothing on the rear like the fronts. Also checked the tyre pressures while they were off, all fine. Obviously I adjusted the left rear tyre.

i nailed the inside edge on mine due to dodgy settings on the geom. one commment i would make is the setting gave a much smoother wear pattern, as in if you took the the corner of the tyre off witha striaght line, yours def looks like rubbing due to the shape of the wear.
just out of interest when was the suspension changed? is it too soft? or is it failing and under load causing the rubbing (you'd not see see it touching when parked etc)

I had a simular experience on my STi my06 on the rears and the inner 2 inch were through to the canvas and the rest of the tyre was well above the legal limit and could not be seen from the side of the vehicle and was only visible if you looked from the rear end underneath.had a full 4 wheel allignment and 2 new tyres fitted and all seems ok at the moment. The damage on yours seems to be more sidewall damage than mine.
Gents its well worth a good regular check to avoid a serious blowout from hidden problems

this is either, ur CAMBERS OR SUSPENSIONS, had the same problem with my Evo, and had to sort and align the cambers
also i would suggest you do a 4x4 digital wheel alignment, and it will be sorted

Just 4 things hear .
1) Your tracking is out and you are compensating gor it in your driving
2)Check your wheel arch
3)Check your wish bone and your tracking rod
4)Check tyre pressure
could be one of these

It happened to amate of mine to but it was on the outside of the wheel where it had been rubbing the arch. Cann't think where it would rub on the inside though. But it defo is. could you not hear it rubbing at any stage.

toe out
did the same years ago on a nova and managed to do a set of pirrellis in just under a month.
managed to get them replaced for free as part of kwick fitts accidental guarantee LOL
was a bit dodgy, but it helps having a mate as a supervisor

Hi Mate,
Just seen ur thread, i notice you have braided lines, is it possible that the hose is rubbing on the inside edge of the tyre when on full lock, only reason i say is that when i fitted my hoses the attachment on the hose that you fit to the strut was way off and the hose was very close to the tyre.
Cheers

Fitted 4 new tyres and had the alignment done again. Rear camber was out and toe-in and toe-out was also out. Hopefully the alignment will solve the issue.

Looks like an alignment problem there, I would recommend a 4 wheel alignment check A.S.A.P!! If the tyre had been rubbing, you would have heard it, plus you would probably have smelt it!!
