Just sold an Evo IV (261 BHP) to get an 03 WRX, it feels a similar speed, but the WRX doesn't seem to accelerate very well in 5th gear from any speed.

My WRX has PPP so has same power as standard 03 STI but more torque! Insurance for me being 30yo was £400 or so cheaper too. Not really planning to go beyond 300bhp.

Had a spirited drive away from the lights behind an Astra GSI turbo and the GSI left me. (I'm not used to launching the Scoob yet.) But a Civic Type R was roughly the same speed trying to keep up behind.

Matt some simple exhaust mods will reduce the turbo lag and help you with the launching .... ;-)

The best advice would be just to finalise a budget and test drive whatever you can afford.
I chose a WRX because it was considerably cheaper to buy, insure, run and now tax but it isn't that much slower! I also wasn't a fan of the STi gold wheels and blue interior (blue carpet on anything other than a blue car just looks strange to me ).
Either way, it's a buyers market so look around and have fun.

It's got a Blitz exhaust on at the mo, not sure how far back it goes.

Is that due to turbo lag then when flooring the pedal whilst stood and seeing no power whatsoever? The Astra GSI was literally 40m up the road by the time I'd gone 5m.

I found with the PPP as soon as the revs dip below 3000 rpm you lose your boost and have to wait for them to pick back up, so yes I suppose it is. First mods I made to mine were a decat uppipe and a prodrive sportscat downpipe, even just doing this reduced the turbo lag considerably and made the car smoother to drive etc With regards to launching try 5000rpm then dump the clutch and hold on! I have now done a decat and sports cat downpipe and must admit that the car is quicker off the line now

Cheers! I was just ticking over normally when I floored it. TBH I think slightly modded Astra turbos are just mentally quick. There was a local one that used to murder the EVO IV and MK2 Gti I owned.

Did your PPP tick over at 1,000 revs when stopping then drop to 500 after a few seconds?

Guys, would I be able to get an STI blobeye for around the 8K mark, or is that a bit wishful thinking? Would I have to go older and get a bugeye STI for this kind of budget?

Thanks for any advice.

look on auto trader, ebay is all dealers or people who bid the price up themselves,
Scooby net is full or enthusiasts who have spent a mint on their cars and expect to get that back hence most of the prices are ott
ie on auto trader iv recently seen a 05 uk spec sti for a fiver under 9k from a dealer so youll get some warrenty,
you should get a blob for 8k maybe not a sti though
there are exeptions there not all overpriced on here just most of them, I understand cause iv got a classic type r that i want to sell but cant as id loose too mutch money

Thanks for that Badbird. I would get a Bug eye Sti but I just cant get over how rubbish they look with those headlights, sorry any bugeye owners

Just out of interest, is there much mechanical difference between the bugs and blobs??

After all your helpful advice I test drove a bugeye and a blobeye. Blobeye came up trumps so I am now the chuffed new owner of this: -

Pick it up very soon and cant wait

Incidentally, I bought it from RRH Autos in Hindhead, highly reccommended.

i've got a bugeye wrx, i've just spent over 1k (at least) to get it to where i'm atm. if i had a chance i would much prefer getting a sti, as i would be hitting 300+ horses with the same mods
