It is perfectly legal to cross on the amber if you are too close to stop or maybe there is someone close behind you who might ram you if you tried to stop. Pretty stupid of the prat in front to slam on the brakes when he had just crossed on the amber with someone behond him.

In Holland means that bloody anything could be happening, a tram is crossing, random cloggies on bikes might descend upon you

I was being too generous to the prius driver thinking he might have some gumption..my loss

Red means stop, amber means slow down and stop before the line.
Unless you have a different HC to me ??

But anyway in the real world we all skip through on amber

Hopefully the camera wasn't loaded, but you have to wait 14 days to see and, as everyone knows.....

Amber also means stop, and you only should proceed if you are already beyond the stop line, or if failing to stop would be likely to cause an accident. Telling a police officer that the lights were "only" on amber would be deemed to be an admission of guilt.

I got 3 points (TS10) and a £60 fine for going through an amber light . . . they've now expired though

Hmmm,

when an ex-girlfriend was caught through a red light the letter actually said how long after the red light it was when she went through. If you were already past the lights before the red, perhaps it won't be able to time it. Besides maybe your car 'stalled' after passing the lights causing you to be sat there.

The cameras only flash if you go over the sensors in the road after the light turns red. They will not flash if you go though on amber, as there is no way for them to ascertain whether you could have stopped safely. A policeman, however, could make that call. If a camera gets you, unless there is evidence that it's faulty, you're pretty much screwed. I seem to recall one incident reported on here where a driver got an NIP from a red light camera when he had only gone through the red light to allow the passage of an emergency vehicle. Not sure what transpired, but I hope they were let off!

Two weeks plus a reasonable time for postage.

So it could be a couple of months then!
