Technically you can be refused entry and turned around at the airport if you have committed a "crime involving moral turpitude". Assault is one of these.
Moral turpitude - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia .Having said that the nice gentleman that asks all the personal questions at the point of entry probably doesn`t have the ability to find out. I`m assuming that your friends g/f is not american and your friend has no intention of living in the U.S. in the future. If thats the case then he might get away with it.

He's just visiting his English gf who is on a kindo of special study thing over there as part of her uni course for a few months. So, yep he's only there for a quick visit and then right on back.

From the Wikipedia page quoted a couple of posts before:
"...No guidance is provided to the traveller as to which offences are included in the definition; the website of the U.S. embassy in London advises that a visa is required for anyone who has ever been arrested or convicted for any offence...."
Youd be surprised how much **** you can have been caught doing which falls outside the definition of moral terpitude, too...

lol, I don't know exactly how long it was, all I know is that it was
not a really long amount of time, it may be less than about a year.
Will have to ask him next time he ventures forth from his room

GBH isn't moral turpitude. I'd say tick NO to the questions on the back.
Things like :
Are you a Terrorist?,
Were you an active member of the **** Party etc.....
Just read the definition of Moral Turpitude.
If the US applied that strictly - they'd never let anyone in.
Especially bummers.

By their definition it is.
"...Assault with intent to kill, commit rape, commit robbery or commit serious bodily harm..."
Id sooner look them in the eye and lie, than risk owning up to this at immigration. Do you think that a Homeland Security goon will appreciate the finer points of a debate about mens rea? If youre convicted of committing GBH, no amount of arguing will convince them: your intention has been defined by your guilty verdict...

Homeland security are a pain in the **** and I had afew problems went I went to NY as I was selected to have further interviews at the passport desk. They are however thicker than setting concrete and simple enough to deal with if you stay relaxed and patient.
