I am pro Rolex, a bit sad really. But we know most peeps have heard of Rolex whether its a fake or real.

Thing with my SeaDweller is it will take what you throw at it, play golf in it and you're not worried about hitting a duff shot and vibrating it to death
and when i test it out diving... in the bath... it doesn't steam up like my old Timex did

The only thing that upset me with my Dayton was seeing Stan Collimore in Joe Dolluchi's resturant in Lichfield the other year wearing the same one as i had one

It is nice to see other quality watches on peoples wrist. I find I'm always looking at the watch to gauge what the person could be like
My wife is starting looking too, the other week she said to me.. Has he got a rolex on... is she weraing a Cartier... etc.

Beware posh watches! I just fell on the floor ordering a new battery for my Breitling - £55 EEK!!! All for a 50p bog standard lithium battery. Bloody thieves!!!

Must get an 'automatic' Rolex next - will pay for itself over 50yrs - just like solar panels . D

I see. Ive never been to a second or two a day though. The only reasonable quality watch to offer anything like value is a Rolex Oysterquartz; and theyre still poor.

I don't want to hijack the thread but while on the subject of watches.......

For a good few years I have always fancied a TAG (just like the look of some of them and they are not "stupid" money). At the end of Nov it's my 30th so I thought I would put together any money that family, g/f etc give me and then put the rest in myself and treat myself to TAG, something for my 30th and hopefully something to keep for many years

Now I don't have thousands to spend on a watch like some of you on here (budget about 1k which I think is plenty for a watch ) anyone got any comments on TAG's, particular ones to look at/avoid?

Or possibly any other makes for around my budget? I'm not really one for leather straps, prefer metal ones and I don't have a huge wrist.

My first proper watch was a TAG-Heuer 4000 bi-colour automatic. Make sure that you buy an automatic watch: that way at least youre getting a lot more watchmaking for only a bit more money.

Had you thought about a used watch? You could get a beautiful clean Heuer Carrera for well under £1,000.

I have had a couple of tags.. But like i said earlier in the thread,they send my arm green and gammy due to the high content of zinc in the bracelet.So that is something to take into account.
Like GC8 says,buy a mechanical watch be it new or S/H.. Quartz watches have £10 of workings at the most..So its a bit of a rip off..

Speedmaster chrono dates can be had for £1200ish which are a beautiful watch.

It'll still need servicing, though... I'm not aware of any watch that's entirely maintenance-free, unless you just get a dirt cheap Casio and change the battery yourself or bin it when it goes flat

Why - now't wrong with the Breitling Thermo-compensated super quartz movement used in their chrono's, for accuracey you can't get much better +/- 1 second per year.............

By the same token I only own one quartz now and that's a Citizen divers watch used as a beater....

Their is something about auto's but I think the appeal can be short lived if you end up with one that loses masses of time per day i.e. more than 5-10 seconds. Whilst you can have them regulated it can be costly if you have not got a good local repairer near by.

Would an auto that very rarely gets used (say, 2-3 days a month) be less reliable than a quartz? I wonder if the stop-start scenario and the constant re-setting the time when the "charge" runs out would be of any detriment?

I wear a Tag 2000 bi-metal for work (WK1120) 5-6 days a week. It's a quartz and has never missed a beat in 4 years, just had a battery recently. I'll consider a Breitling auto when it (finally) gives up the ghost but my other watches are rarely worn, hence the q' about auto's

It would depend on what you are comparing.

If the quartz is COSC certified then any auto will struggle to be as accurate. But to answer your question more directly, so long as you keep the "auto" watch in a relatively warm place i.e. room temperature and ensure the crown is always in the locked position it should be fine.

The problem with not wearing watches for long periods is that the oils used to lubricate then can / do dry out resulting in a watch that can gain or lose large amounts of time.

If you are thinking of getting an auto and it will be worn only at weekends etc it may be worth investing in a watch winder - these vary in price but you can pick them up for about £60-£100 for a half decent one. That way your watch will not need setting every time you choose to wear it and shouldn't dry out.

Automatic and quartz mechanical watches needed servicing on a regular basis to ensure accuracey, anything between every 2 - 5 years dependant on brand, use etc etc

Never thought of getting a second hand watch.

I guess with this type of watch (regardless of make) you should always have a certificate of some sort to prove it's authenticity, regardless if it's second hand or brand new?

Three quarters of the reason flashy watches cost so much is because of the investment in marketing and branding - very costly glossy ads in GQ, The Face, etc every week. It may also be the ' reason' I dont want a TAG (too aspirationally 'common' and it only means 'day' in German) and so settled for the better marketed (and less celeb sponsored) amateur ground pilots watch of choice - a Breitling). Also to a wrist posy knobber this name sounds FAR more 'hoch' or upper class German or posh Swiss Romansch than a watch called 'Ball' or 'Day'!!!).

Anyway - the point I am making is that it is all far more pose rather than engineering at the end of the day. Sorry to call a spade (and I wear a Swiss spade) a spade poseurs.
