I don't think you can stereotype a person for the way they type on a forum.
If you don't like the way someone has written a given sentence then don't read it or respond simple as, I thought this forum was for all not just the ones who want to control it.

But is it? my daughter who is 14 goes to a grammer school which ranks in the top schools in the country, speaks 3 languages & performs at a higher level than alot of 'normal' comprehensive children uses text speak because it is the modern day way of using the english language to talk on electronic media {phones, messenger etc} so is she of low intellegence then? where will this shameful behaviour stop.

Personally I couldn’t care less about spelling grammar etc., but you more or less defeat your own arguments by stating that children use text speak as a way of communicating on electronic media.
I take it the majority of people posting in this forum are over 18?

My problem with it is when every other word in a long sentence is text speak.... I normally like to help people out when I can with issues on here but when I see text speak I simply lose the will to help them.....
If I wanted help, advice or to be taken seriously from a community I would try to type in a user friendly way to get the most on-topic responses.... lets be honest which of the two sentences would make you want to help
1) Hi All having problems with my ......... any advice would be much appreciated
or
2) Easy, avin probs wit me ...... n e ad wud b sweeeeeeeeet......
So that is a vote for 'yes' from me....

You really want to try a spell checker mate, ‘grammer school’, ‘intellegence’?

The main point I was trying to make is if 14 year olds are using text speak regularily now then in some 4 - 5 years it will be even more common as these children will become adults and so the circle continues just like the acronym situation.
It also does not mean that adults over 18 are not in the text speak circle alot have children who use it too so it would be something they are used to themselves.
Personally I think alot of it is people are afraid of what they do not understand and are wanting to hold things to the way they want them to be.
Eitherway ban it I don't use it myself alot, but if it becomes an infraction fest for using text speak I can see alot of potential problems as a single use of a word will give some people reason enough to infract away.
Maybe we should not use any abbreviations at all or acronyms in any posts thats the only way people will probably be happy, but then again not as there will always be 2 sides to every arguement {discussion}
Many thanks again for your time it has been very pleasant writing another post
Paul.

I don't think it should be banned personally. This is a public forum for everyone, and if people want to use it then that's fine, although they can't expect to be taken as seriously or have as many sensible replies to a question as if they had taken the time to type it out in proper english.
Obviously a lot of the people that hate text speak on this forum are the ones that are older and have a lot of knowledge about Subarus, so if someone posts on here in text speak, they are missing out on the decent advice.

Considering that this is a forum, where people acutally write things out rather than use abreviated language (not abreviations) when you don't really have to, and considering that you don't even have to use abreviated language on mobile communication devices anymore because it was all due to a lack of bandwidth, I voted yes for a ban (even if my english sucks you can still understand it the first time around )

The dumbing down of a worldwide and established language to the extent it almost becomes gibberish and requires a great effort to decipher shouldn't be encouraged.
Perchance is your daughter fluent enough in these three languages to text speak in all of them or has she learnt the languages as they should be spoken? Therein lies your answer.

I voted no, I think it is too harsh to ban it, as much as I dont like it
secondly how the hell would it be moderated, I doubt the moderation team would be able to cope and would end up relying on either RTM's (if people can be bothered) or Infractions which I dont believe will work

Well ok the last part is exaggerated, but the whole reading it part is the problem. You wouldn't expect an international user to write in their home language would you, which is basically as hard to read as some of the recent text speak drivvle.

I'm more than happy for someone to use abbreviations, imho it's part of the bbs culture. I have also taken part in the "grammar wars" in a light hearted manner. However I do find extensive use of text or l33t speak rather annoying, and hard to read. I would much prefer if people could use something akin to the Queen's English when posting. I have NO problem with the occasional use of ur, m8, and other such linguistic conveniences. I also couldn't give a tinkers cuss if people want to use colloquialisms or common slang terms that they would use as part of their active vocabulary when conversing with their companions, acquaintances and family members. If someone uses a term that I'm not familiar with, and I feel the need to avail myself of an explanation, or clarification, of that term, then I'm more than capable of asking for it. To couch it in terms that are less flowery, TXT SPK GTS ON MI TTS.
If you can't spell, use a spell checker (Firefox ), if your grammar isn't up to some peoples expectations, then they'll hopefully not be too unforgiving. As for the linguistic police, give people a brake, we arent all perfect like wot you is. I myself have been know to make une petité erreur on occasion, and I will try to be less of a pedant.
I feel that I'm unable to vote for a ban for the following reasons.
It is censorship, something that should be resisted. The swear filter is fine, a necessary protection in a polite, modern, litigious and infractious society.
It is unenforceable, who will be the arbiter of what is considered acceptable, and what the tariff of punishments will be set to?
Unfair. Some posters are simply more comfortable with, or prefer text speak. Either because it is quicker, or they just like the linguistic style.
Finally, language evolves, it's a living thing. If it didn't we wouldn't have imho, afaik, tv, bye, hi. If you look back even 50 years, the day to day language of Mr. Average was noticeably different, go back 100, 200, 300 years and see the changes.

I am not a lover of text speak {now said for about the 3rd time} however I can understand why it is used as said before.
As far as dumbing down of the language this happens all the time surely on that example LOL, FYI, HTH etc becomes gibberish to people who do not understand think about how many people ask what SIAL means now that is a acronym for a word which is pretty unique to here {and maybe other subaru forums?} so should those words too be worded correctly for the people who do not understand what they mean.
To me and maybe I am just openminded, it isn't hard to get a grasp of the shortened word it takes time like anything else but it's about the willingness to want to understand, but instead alot would rather dictate because thats the way THEY want it.
I don't necessarily think it should be encouranged as a day to day complete thread lead but I don't think people who post maybe once or twice should be flamed down, banned or anything else just because it is the way they type and thats what they know or maybe use to respond or maybe even they are not great spellers so use it for that reason.
At the end of the day what ever happens to the ruling it make very little difference to me I am like many other just expressing my view on the given subject.
Just for the record I am sure she can probably text speak in some of them, although I wouldn't understand it lol, I know she uses her phone in different languages on a regular basis when I see her at the weekend I will ask her

You have a point there. As much as I deplore illiteracy in general, it is deliberate text speak that really gets me down. Although I have voted for it being banned, I agree that it really is unenforceable. What I would like to see is text speak being actively discouraged, either by a quiet word from a moderator, or by legitimised criticism of the text-speakers by the SN community. Naturally, the criticism shouldn't be directly insulting or flaming.

This is the issue though... lots of people (me included) cannot read the drivvle posted. So when that happens, people get wound up, leave sarcastic replys and then a general feeling off bad well being descends

I voted to get shot of it.
It's not a text message, and letters are free. If people must use it, leave it on your phone. I don't like receiving messages off people using "txt speak".
It's not the English language evolving either.. it's downright lazy, nothing more.
Bad spelling, grammar, etc, I can tolerate, but "txt speak" users should be flogged, and burnt on a stake.

I really hate text speak but I believe it is not enforceable without a great deal of time devoted to it by our volunteer moderators.
Can it not be made as a suggestion in the rules to limit the amount of text speak?
Text speak also makes it difficult for the partially sighted people among us who use screen/text readers! I suppose it would make searching the bbs more difficult as well.
I voted 'No', this is a public bbs that is available for free and open to anyone. If they wanted to text speak, then so be it, I don't have to read it. If you start verbally chatting to me in 'text' talk, I overheard this the other day, I might metaphorically punch you...
On the other hand, I would love to ban it at work! In a business environment, I do not expect to see 'text' email's!
My 2p, for what it is worth...
FFS, WTF, NFW..... BBQ

Question: Forget all the liberal, 'let people be individual' twaddle. Does anybody here actually want to read text speak?
If not, then surely we have our answer.
If your fourteen year old daughter is using it when chatting to her mates, great for her. But I bet they're using it too.
I fink 'Nu Labour' as a lot to ansa 4.
