No from me. The rule should be banning unreadable messages or persistent users that submit unreadable messages...

So to what extent would this letter of the law be applied for example if I wrote the following sentence.
"Is that price a good one m8?" would I be banned for using m8? Or if I wrote.
" I can get the car 2 u by the end of the week?" Are you saying you can't understand that? If you are, then you have fallen into the age old trap of "a little here a little there and you can justify anything". Isn't this the same reason why we are now paying so much tax ..... ooh the planet is dying so let's tax the 'newer' cars
. Diesel is increases my fuel economy so lets make it more expensive. B4 (woops before) this happened a little bit of suggestion was used beforehand.
This may sound far fetched but most inhumane situations in the world start with a little bit of suggestion. Hitler, Stalin, now scoobynet <---- of course thats a joke (take a joke for heaven sake....) but you can see where Im going with this.

I don't think anyone is talking about banning users that use txt speak but a self policing ethos of a text free zone as said above, that could be a simple smiley ...
![](http://www.bigpower.co.uk/forum/images/smiles/english.gif)
The more that text speak is tolerated by some and not by others it creates divides and arguments in here and that is never good apart from in Muppets (if that still exists)
It does not have to be a **** state to enforce this but looking at the poll results so far it seems to be an overwhelming majority that want it gone and democracy will win the day.

Using your little here, little there philosophy - that would be exactly the reason why m8 shouldn't be tolerated. It wouldn't be long before gr8 or l8r was and then it just starts to get harder and harder to draw a distinct line (and harder to understand).

I still remember people arguing against computers. Now how many of you can honestly say you write more than you type, txt, etc???

On other boards i use where this is banned it is in the T&C's and newbies who do use it are quickly but politely reminded no text speak please. Soon sorts them out!
For that reason i've voted yes.

Additionally m8 gr8 etc etc are done to save the amoutn of characters you can put in a single text. there is no need to do that on here so why allow it to annoy people?
Standard, recognised abbraviations i think do stand though, i.e. (there's one) No.3 for number three and things like that.
The rule simply needs to be enforced with common sense. As i said, tell newbies early on and you will find that apart from the odd slip they can manage to write in complete sentences.

Computers are the devils work ..... but thankfully they pay my bills so I concede that they have their uses![Wink](images/smilies/wink.gif)
I have seen examples of people writing full questions in General Technical in txt spk or with a complete allergy to punctuation. I like to help as do a lot of the people that frequent that forum and it makes it very difficult to do so.

Oh dear I was not pointing out any spelling errors (your assumption got the better of you) ...... I was pointing out that he wanted to punish people. Which was obvious in my use of the following sentences (this is how you would usual grasp the meaning of any paragraph, message, etc). I don't religiously look at my spelling as I know to the average person they always make sense.... but it would appear that this statement is true in your case "Better to keep quiet and let people think your a fool, than open your mouth and remove all doubt...." <---- This is u..... woops you.

IMHO I'm not trying any harder than I usually do. You will probably find spelling mistakes in many of my posts. I am all for comprehension than writing a complete, grammatically correct post. That was done when I got my Post Graduate qualifications ..... As long as there is a good level of comprehension in the post that will do me.

No, whats next? When I joined this website it was a lot more interesting than it is now, what with the infraction system appearing and threads ten pages long just because a newbie has used txt speak. Freedom of speach is where it's at. Apart from anything else the mods can't even manage the site now so how will it be enforced? I prefer to make my own mind up about people, i.e someone who can't be arsed to string a few words together is a lazy tw@t! I don't however want to have a ten page discussion about it! Now how about doing away with the infraction system instead, lets have some proper f*cking arguments!

Simon,
Ban it and ban people using it. It's a deplorable *******isation of the language, those using it should be shot.
Would you apply for a job using text speak? Would you write a report using text speak? Of course not, it is an insult to the reader that you couldn't be bothered to write your message out properly.
Thank you

I voted yes, but obviously to a degree...
There appear to be quite a few illiterate people on SN, and being a fan of good grammar and punctuation, I feel, not only would it be good for SN to have members who can actually spell, but would be a good starting point for those who can't. Surely if they can learn how to fix a car on here, they can learn to spell at the same time.....

Arguably it is quite a good way to quickly identify people who aren't worth paying any attention to. When was the last time you saw anything useful, informative and accurate, or any sort of well-reasoned argument, written using 'txt' language?
Nothing I've ever seen written in txt speak has ever been worth the time it's taken me to read it.

Firstly, I'd like to distance myself from the kind of person who derives pleasure in pointing out every single spelling, grammar or compositional mistake that some poor sod has made in their post. Being overly pedantic serves little purpose and makes a person look smug.

We already enforce much more difficult matters on SN. Decided whether someone is trolling, for example, is much more ambiguous and open to interpretation than whether they are using text speak. I think we're all capable of using our discretion as to whether someone has just used the odd 'm8' or whether the whole/good proportion of the message is composed in such a fashion.
I'm also not suggesting an individual be banned for using it. I'm suggesting that text speak is banned i.e. it becomes infraction worthy. So only someone who used it extensively and repeatedly in defiance with the wishes of the community would be banned.
Something else to lighten the mood!

I feel the 'banning' of any form of communication is a step in the wrong direction. Yes, it is lazy and yes, it really does annoy me. But that is my problem. There is no need to get all '****' about it.
Where is the freedom that once existed on this site? Everyone is so determind to make everyone behave how they want them to. Someone tried this once and his name was Adolf.![Thumb](images/smilies/thumb.gif)
Just accept that this is not 'your' site, it is 'our' site.

Anyway you can blame BT for all this, SMS was designed as a method for engineers to communicate to each other with the least ammount of bandwidth available to them, but for some reason its now the biggest earner for mobile phone companies

HM forces have for absolutely ages, used a short form of messaging, though that is understandable, unlike the subject matter

I can see your point but at what point do you stand up and say this is what we believe in? Why should the majority of people be annoyed by a minority and then say it is our problem to just accept it. When does it become their responsibility to behave in a way that benefits the majority. Rather than being all huggy involving about it we need to have a line where these things are called to a halt. Putting up with rubbish from the minorities is one of the main problems this country has at the moment.

What is wrong with a polite, 'If you wish to continue using this site, we would appreciate if you would write your posts using recognized English.'
I think this fairer than just banning them on the spot.
This forum is getting very 'clicky' as of late.
