Also FYI (is that to be banned?) this thread is about banning text speak not those who use it. If someone makes their first few posts using text speak where is the harm in reminding them that it is banned from this site.
If they persist in doing it only then does it need to be escalated.

The use of textspeak is for a specific purpose, ie to shorten messages on a mobile phone.
This is fine if you want to use that form of communication but to use it on a forum is an appalling drop in standards to my mind.
English is a fine language and we should at least continue to use it properly unless there is a very good reason not to do so. Its very use anywhere is a threat to our own language as we have seen.

I'm new to here and i've voted YES. Although a warning should be given 1st. If this is ignored then another from the main man of the site is to send a personal message asking them to type properly. If you have bad spelling then that is different. People can understand that, however, you can google the word and it'll correct it for you. I don't even txt type when i'm on the txting on the phone.
Aslo If you tpye lettres in teh worng odrer btu teh 1st adn lsat lettres in tiher corrcet plcae yuo cna sitll raed it. Well sometimes you can

To clear up a few misunderstandings/misconceptions.
This issue was -rightly in my view- raised by Nat 21 in the SN policy section.
Webby then suggested a poll! He argued that it should be fairly worded in order to give a genuine indication of that the SN community thought. For all those who say this is a dictatorship, or that webby doesn't want this community to be about us rather than him, I'll repeat: HE asked US to canvass SN for what WE as a COMMUNITY thought!
I posted the poll in accordance in webby’s proposed wording.
As for SN being very cliquey (sp?), er, well if wanting to converse with people who take the time and effort to express themselves in a manner that doesn’t require a codebook to translate messages is cliquey, then fine! Such accusations have been levelled at this community before in respect of people in the Muppets forum, so this is nothing new. If we're going to form a clique' let it be predicated around something transparent, fair and non-arbitrary.
It would appear that, so far, the majority of SN find text speak annoying and would like to see the back of it on here, so it's hardly a few getting on their high horse.
If requesting that people take the time to express themeselves properly is petty, then I'll put my hands up to being petty!

Chris, Lets not turn this into a debate on infractions, the very fact that there is a publically viewable appeals thread should be evidence enough that he at least tries to ensure people get a say.
He doesn't have to do this - and it would be less hassle for him if he didn't

Oh come on! If you ban a form of communication, where does it stop? I thought you for one would have realised this. Yes, it can be annoying, but so can being stung by a bee. Shall we ban bee's?

Its not a universal communications language, ie not used by everyone, so its not understood, and yes its lazy language, though for a demonstration here you go ![Smile](images/smilies/smile.gif)

I want to be really clear about this.
For us to actually ban this, the voting would have to be absolutely overwhelming. I'll be honest, its not far off that, but it isn't there yet.. but the voting has also been skewed by a few people with extreme views.
The reason for this is that it needs to be causing an actual problem for it to be necessary.
If you asked 100 people whether they liked green dresses, and 100% of them said they hated them, it still wouldn't be reasonable to ban green dresses.
Green dresses don't actually cause a problem.
So. I was looking for way over 90% of people to hate it before I'd go to the next step and investigate what problems it truly causes.
As things stand, we're too far off that kind of representation to even move to the next step.
If on the other hand someone can tell me what actual problem it causes, and we feel this is important enough to actually ban a form of communication (that you could otherwise simply ignore), then we'll go to the next step.
Until then, I fail to see what problem it causes which cannot be avoided by those who hate it simply adding people who use text speak to their ignore list.

It's got nothing to do with bees, wasps or honey badgers. Your on the world wide net not your phone. I'd guess that most of you are over 20 years old. It's just the few n00bs that are young and lazy and they talk / txt / type in the txt language. Hanging around with their mates saying "O.M.G did you see that".
I'm also on CorsaSport and they also jump on people that txt type. They average age on that site must be 19 but most of them do not agree with it.
To be honest, in my opinion, there isn't a time or a place for it.

Excellent point. Anyone non UK (and we have a few) or those where english might not be first choice at home will find it much easier with a forum that upholds the basic standards of language.

As I've already said, I have not voted, as despite the fact I hate text speak, I'm not sure an outright ban would work. Actively discourage, but ban, I'm just not sure.

Yes for me, I'm a really bad speller so when it comes to spelling I have no probs, though why people cant use a spell check is beyond me....What I hate more than misspelling or bad punctuation (I have both lol) is the people that go on and on about it. There was one poor new chap on here who genuinely had problems yet some people still took it apon themselves to bash the hell out of him
and to those ankers I'd just like to say that not all of us are as obviously bright and intelligent as you so have problems with spelling and punctuation, this does not mean we are thick or lazy and by no means does it give the right for you to bully and abuse......sorry to rant but some people on this forum(luckily a small minority) are real c**ks.....back to the topic in hand though, as I say spelling is one thing, abbreviation is just short hand but this text speak, though it maybe a valid form of communication to some, to me just seems like child talk and if you are old enough to drive shorly u shouldn't be talking like a child? I could be wrong about this and badly stereotyping but to me people who talk this way are generally the ones that drive like complete twts too, giving us the chav reputation that seems to be going around still.

Yes i wont enter into a post with text speak.
Yes i personally think its a lazy way of communicating.
But come on for gawds sake, if it bothers you
Ignore it!!!
