Should text speak be Banned on ScoobyNet?

I think it would be the wrong attitude to place it on one's ignore list. I prefer to be able to fully understand what anybody is saying on this forum and I think that textspeak might be difficult to understand fully in all cases.
That is in addition to my previous views of upholding the English language.
I know a lot of people who feel the same way even if they are not "grandfathers."

The use clearly causes issues, as it's not widely understood. As I stated earlier, I wouldn't type in 'Geordie Speak', and expect to be taken seriously, or even understood, so why is text speak ok?
It's ok to say, just ignore these posts, but when you are wanting or giving advice, that becomes increasingly difficult, when more and more people communicating in some alien language are cropping up.

I work in the games industry so have an iterest in what people have to say about games and consoles, this is an example of some of the crp I wade through on places like youtube.

To summarise:
1) No-one would get banned outright for using it, at worst, it would be infraction-able, at best, status quo, with the exception that it's open season on taking the pee out of anyone using it!
![Thumb](images/smilies/thumb.gif)
2) SN is about communication in a community - I see nothing wrong with consulting the community to see what everyone thinks about upholding standards of communication. It's in the community's interests.
3) Text speak is more than just an annoyance to those who communicate properly: its confusing for people who might want to partake in SN, but who don't speak english as a first language and it causes problems of people with dyslexia. Also, it discriminates against people using screen readers, i.e. blind individuals!
4) Threads on SN serve as an advert for the community; they play a part in determining the calibre of poster we get in the future. If text speak becomes prevalent, the effect is akin to dropping litter: one person does it, others follow, and before long the place is like a s*ithole and no-one cares anymore - the only people who want to live there are people with a similar "can't be arsed" attitude.

Have you ever watched Fawlty Towers when Basil tries to attract a higher class of clientele? Your post sounded just like him!![Thumb](images/smilies/thumb.gif)
I see what you are saying but the poll is titled 'Should text speak be Banned on Scoobynet?'. Police it, yes. But a ban, as I and many others have said, is a step in the wrong direction for SN and I question anyone's motives who think otherwise.
I agree that it is a very lazy way of communicating and those who conduct themselves in this manner should be asked to do otherwise. Just don't start getting all 'draconian' on them. It just makes you look as bad and over sensitive.

When I signed up for another internet forum one of the rules of the forum was:
"This is an online discussion forum, not a text message service or an instant private messenger. We don't expect perfect spelling and grammar, but at least make an effort. Text slang (e.g., "hi r u going 2 NVCF") is harder to read than plain English and presents you as a small child using a mobile phone. Familiar acronyms (HTH, IMHO, TIA, FWIW etc.,) are fine but should be kept to a minimum."
I was pleased to see that, its a good rule.
I personally dispise text speak in posts - so its a yes, ban it, vote from me.

Another forum I visit has this as number 9 in it's forum do's and don'ts.
L33t 5pe4k 1S l4M3. d0n'T U53 1t iN h3RE (If you can't read that, then you don't need to worry about it)
Which I think is a nice way of dealing with it, text speak is for texting and has no place on a forum.
IMO, anyone using it should be politey asked not to and then warned if they persist - or their posts ignored
Disclaimer: This opinion in no way discriminates against those who may be dyslexic or have trouble with their spelling and grammar as we all do on occasion

So, is this a fair summary of the things so far?
The majority of those that have voted find txt or l33t speak a problem
Use of acronyms such as imho, when used in moderation is acceptable
Spelling and grammar pedants, myself included (at times) need to be more forgiving of errors, either typographical or otherwise
An outright ban is unenforceable, and could be seen as censorship
The community, i.e. us could use polite, friendly admonishment to those that insist on extensive use of txt or l33t speak
Newbies should be encouraged to use "Conversational English"
An addition to the terms and conditions and maybe a sticky in policy along the lines of "please keep it to a minimum" could be a suitable solution.
An additional smiley could be added for use when appropriate
Infractions should only be used as a last resort, when all else fails.
Even better, simply ignore the post, or if you really don't like the members posting style, use the ignore user feature!

Use of caps lock, though incorrect grammatically, and not pleasing aesthetically, does not detract from the legibility and render a post much more difficult to comprehend as text speak does. It should be frowned on stylistically, but it does not present the same practical problems as text speak, so doesn't require a similar poll IMHO

Good thing is people don't do this. They do type in text speak and as such i think there should be a ban. Why shouldn't text speak be subject to the same policing?
