True. My only worry is that the infraction system is forcing everybody to post in such a 'PC' manner that we are starting to lose some of the 'harmless banter' that made this site so great. ![Thumb](images/smilies/thumb.gif)
Yes, we have to stop trolling, but not at the expense of limiting discussion.

I wholeheartedly agree.

Right.
So the poll results show that Snet members are 3 to 1 agaisnt Text speak. That is an over-whelming majority is it not?
Can there be a clause put in the membership rules that you agree to when you sign up saying that Text speak is not welcome here and members should try not to use it when they post?
I think that would then give more weight to people when asking users who post in Text speak to please refrain

lol you got me, it's is a shortened form of "it has" or "it is", its is a possesive word, "I don't like its colour"
Also gets on my nerves when people can't use "cant and can't"

lol I made a new word, instead of "no such" I wrote "nuch"
Yeah there are quite a few "cants" on here
But I think things such as apostrophes are quite an **** issue, compared to "a" and "an"
a mistake with "a" and "an" is basically the same as "you is" and "you are".
most people on this website don't use "an" for words that need it....

My pet peeve is people writing 'could of' instead of 'could have'. I don't consider that being ****, because only one of those actually makes sense.
Oh, and the widespread use of 'comprises of', when it should be just 'comprises' is a minor irritation. Otherwise, it's like saying, 'he plays of football' or 'I drive of a car'.
Actually, I could be here all day.
I'll get my coat...

Let's ask our esteemed Prime Minister for a definitive answer....
Number10.gov.uk Africa: An historic opportunity
...or maybe not. Who would've thought we'd get conflicting information from 10 Downing Street!?

LOL This is turning into an English lesson now
I think there's a whole lot of difference between using words the proper way like what I don't and text speak, personally I generally write the way I speak
unless its an official document of some sort otherwise I don't see the problem. The use of "a" and "an" are a good example of where people go wrong, but you still understand what they are saying as you take it in context. This is also a car forum after all, an informal situation where one can express ones self! like what I do
, it isn't a formal situation where you don't express personality. I do think there needs to be a limit though, txt speak not only uses the wrong words, it actually spells them so differently they become new words.

If in doubt, quote the Oxford English Dictionary:
"There is still some divergence of opinion over the form of the indefinite article to use preceding certain words beginning with h- when the first syllable is unstressed: 'a historical document' or 'an historical document'; 'a hotel' or 'an hotel'. The form depends on whether the initial h is sounded or not: an was common in the 18th and 19th centuries, because the initial h was commonly not pronounced for these words. In standard modern English the norm is for the h to be pronounced in words like hotel and historical, and therefore, the indefinite article a is used; however, the older form, with the silent h and the indefinite article an, is still encountered, especially among older speakers."
Basically, if you use 'an' before historical, you're an old fart!

A history lesson as it's a stressed intial.
Good Lord, it's not difficult
if the intial is stressed and pronounced then you need to use a, if the inital isn't stressed then you need to prepare for the next letter, which will invariably be a vowel; which requires use of an.
Finally, a request: please do not ever consider anything from our colonial brethren as a basis on which to judge the Queen's english.
