I suspect the logic is that cars with 'solid', if that's possible, residuals will be less affected by the tightening wallets, people are shopping smarting when the economy is tough so less money lost in depriciation is seen as a smart buy. Hence the more premium type brands will do better even though they may be a higher purchase price. They also are better on PCP type deals usually.
Given Subaru's heavy focus on petrol cars until recently it isn't really a surprise that sales are slow, the new Impreza hasn't exactly been the saviour of the company either... I just wonder what the future holds for them because unless they are doing really well in Asia I don't see why the parent company keeps funding them. The whole model line up really needs a significant revamp in both design and quality? On the plus side the diesel engine always gets praise so some sporty models based on this in 09 may help but still gonna need to redo the Legacy which is getting on a bit and work on the exterior and interior of the Impreza and the interior of the new Forester.
I don't even think a real upturn in rally performance would help, have people simply moved on from the road-based rally cars with supercar performance? Personally even if they made the interior like an Audi and the exterior was a hot as hell I don't then think it would feel like a Subaru, maybe a rock and hard place springs to mind. They need to retain the individual feel of Suburu whilst improving the other areas... not easy.

In the days of the Classic's Subaru and Mitzi pretty had the rally car psudo image/performance sewn up... but all the other marques have closed the gap..and the petrol headed enthusiast who needs a four seater car with gut wrenching performance for £20-25k has plenty more to chose from. Double that up with Deisels now performing so well but also providing sensible ecconomy and cheaper road tax..... there you have Subaru's problem... they've sat on the non deisel wagon relying on the Impreza's performance advantage for far too long, and now time's up.....

Subaru are now just another luke warm hatch, only over priced and over emitting on the Co2.
The days of being a performance car secret and bargain of the decade are long gone and Subaru have dined out on it for a fair few years.
They are relying heavily on the diesel boxer to save them, much as porsche did with the 944 way back when.

Beg to differ, my Legacy has averaged 45mpg since i've had it, it's brilliant & I haven't missed the STi at all.
Once the diesel is rolled out to all models & the power is upped for performance variants things may well perk up a bit!

Sales in August were the worst since Aug 1966, but its flawed statistics as the new reg used to roll out in August so it used to have the highest monthly figures of the hole year, now that it changes in September, Augusts figures will be down compared to then! Lies, damn lies and statistics!

At the moment my tank is a quarter full and the trip is showing 300 miles. I'm personally not moaning about mpg otherwise I'd have sold it by now. I even got 372 mpg from a P1 once. Similarly if I had a diesel, instead of 300 plus from a tank I'd get 600 plus from a tank.
My God I'm getting about 220mile on average in my 'PPP' WRX. But it only pootles around town, with no long runs. Guess I'll have a better idea what it's capable of after tomorrow as I'm going from Southport to London in it.

Off boost on a long run at a steady speed and you'll be surprised what 'high' mpg you get.

One good thing about the 08 STI is the SI Drive, in Intelligent mode you can pretty easily see 30mpg but then why but an STI and drive in I mode all the time Still I am actually pretty please with the mpg, for the performance it gives... in Sport # especially

And for those of you with a proper car that doesnt rely on pushing buttons to control it simply dont put your foot down as hard to get "SI" mode and if you want to get "sport #" simply try pushing your foot through the floor.
I dont know, kids these days have it so easy, back in my day we actually had to drive the car and the only "modes" where go and stop!

I'm finding "I" mode on my STI make no difference to Fuel ecconomy.... if anything I'm getting worse mpg because I'm having to push harder on the gas to get anywhere..
S or S# for me...
(even though switching from i to s# mode "mid overtake" still brings a smile to my face )

Haha yeah maybe, I do a lot of motorway and 80 *cough* does get me more in I mode than 80 in S or S#, that said I run pretty much in S and more recently only S#, but I do pop it back into I if the tank is running empty, more psychological, I think it'll help make sure I make it t the next v-power fill up. Driving in I is pretty hard work, my foot aches having to press the throttle down so much.

I have had to get a Diesel second car as it's just so much cheaper as currently Im doing 750 - 800 miles a week. Only 1 hour drive or so each way (as I use toll and motorway) but now I can save hundreds of £ a month and so the second diesel (MGZR diesel) will have paid for itself in about 8 - 10 months).
Tax £120 for year (first year paid for by seller), insurance £300+ fully comp and MOT'd for 12 months so basically I would have paid for the car by mid next year. (even though I paid it out right already).

I think for the considerable future we'll start seeing lower sales figures for most car manufacturers, except ones who have very economical, low Co2 cars. A company such as Subaru, which produces mainly uneconomical cars will get hit more than a most companies.

Well back from London.
probably about 25 miles of none motorway driving, the rest on the motorway doing between 70 to 80 unless traffic dictated other wise 225 miles in total.
Worked out my fuel consumption after getting down there and re filling and averaged about 32MPG I'm happy with that
