Sometimes drive with sidelights during the day if its dingy. Got out of the habit of starting the car with headlights on now aswell, I've just done a set of nightbreakers in 11 months - the surge on startup can reduce bulb life.

sidelights during daylight is no bad thing, its law in some Scandenavian countries as stated.
What gets my goat is the chavs who have the front fogs on all day or worse, front fogs with sidelights only.
That is very lazy and annoying to other motorists oncoming.

I tend to have dipped beam on all the time during the darker months (Nov to Feb) - just makes a car easier to see amongst all the long shadows.
Also have the lights on in dull light (even if it's daytime) and as the shadows lengthen in the summer evenings.
As also previously mentioned, around the flatter parts of the country, it also helps to have the lights on as it makes the car more obvious on long straights.
