If only they didn't fill the box with bollocks you don't want to watch leaving you less than 1/2 the recording time you expected (and HD gobbles it).

Indeed, but that said, I have found quite a few gems on Anytime that I would not have otherwise seen.

But, all things being equal, I would prefer a bigger recording partition for me.

Do you have to have anytime on?

I'm seriously considering it at 75 bucks.

I don't think it's optional, if you have Sky HD you have Anytime, that's it.

Maybe someone knows better?

The bloke who installed mine had to do a software download to get it on.

I'm not sure what everyones problem with it is?

I sort of agree with you about the comprehensive side of things, but I imagine most things these days are actually shot in hd anyway (bbc have been doing it for years apparently), in a few years when the analogue transmissions are no more then things are going to be transmitted in hd anyway (think it is 2012 - okay not exactly tomorrow but its gonna happen). Also I am sure I have read somewhere that a portion of the box sales goes to the bbc/itv (will double check with that)

Geezer
it is more than freeview though, more channels and with some boxes you can actually get even more than the advertised channels.
I was on sky only recently (sky+ and multiroom) think I was paying 57 or 67 per month for it. Most channels I dont watch, the sports I only tended to watch liverpool or any big games / derbies, the movies I tend to have seen anyway and own on disc. Sky is a good system, but I think especially in this current economic climate, people will look at changing things. Now if sky reduced their prices thats a whole different matter.

I know someone will mention the cost of supplying the channels, but the way I look at it if sky charge say £40 per month and they have 1 million subscribers and they charge the same per month if they had 2 mill subscribers then they are buying the programming very cheap and can therefore reduce the costs of the packages to the end user which in turn will probably get them more subscribers. If they reduced prices by half I would re subscribe again

I've got HD purely as there was no point getting normal sky when I got it in feb. Thought 10 quid was a bit steep at the time, but now with the load more channels its much more like it - and the picture quality is ace - Moto GP on Eurosport HD is fooking brill

Freesat is a joke!

Maybe Sky does not pay anymore to the program makers, but do you think it really cost them nothing to set up and distribute the HD service? That's rahter naive to say the least! OK, you can argue that £10 may or may not be good value for money, but compared to some of Skys' offerings now they have 20+ channels, it would appear to be very good value for money in Sky terms!

Free HD telly (like most telly) is a pipe dream. Too many channels seeking too few advertisers means that free tv, in the main is a thing of the past.

Geezer
You sound like the kind of chap that Murdoch loves - how about chucking in another £10 a month premium for your 'existing technology' PVR functions to work on a box you own outright!!?? Ohh no they already tried that didnt they, once. And indeed it does cost millions to send up a satellite, but there ain't a new bird called 'HD' up there!

However, it is as you imply a consumer decision, so if you love the billions of channels and feel its a fair price, then that is fair enough.

It isnt for me much longer though as I consider there to be an underlying strong rip-off element and dislike the model (as do most football fans). So I welcome the no subscription/no PVR premium/no HD premium/no frustrating 0870 call centre/no extra charge to watch telly in your bedroom competition from Freesat HD . It suits me as CH4 HD and BBC1 HD are 80% of my viewing (damnit, plus the odd Car Wars on SKY 3 Doh!! ). D

Many programmes with the budget and with a 'long shelf life' or resale potential are shot in HD, but most UK TV is still SD. Proper HD cameras are still expensive to buy or hire - a proper lens alone is £25k+ and the knock on costs quickly eat into the production budget so content then has to give. Not good.

I love proper HD, but it should never be at the expense of content. Its all still evolving and settling down really and I hope to take it all for granted one day!

Something I did in HD is here Sony GT5/GT Academy/Academy Gallery although I doubt you'd ever know!!!!

Getting Sky HD installed this saturday and really looking forward to it. So will I be getting a more reliable box or stuck with the Thompson one that everybody complains about?

I have the Thompson, its well out of warranty by now, but has been absolutely fine until recently. I believe they did a software update (forum folklore?) and this often kills FUTURE planned recordings It affected many people, but is seemingly better now.

I had to call SKY to try for advice and they get you to disconnect the LNB input leads to 'reset' it. I was also told to turn 3 times on the spot whilst holding an Iceberg lettuce as it helps de-bug the goofer compression pin. Of course this didnt fix it or help the bad code but you have to go through the motions with them!

No, there may not be a new satellite up there, but you cannot simply use all your old existing kit that is set up for SD to broadcast HD!

Like you say though, it is a choice, I just wanted to point out that Freesat will not rival a paying service, ever.

Hell, not even the BBC is free!

Nah, I phoned up 6 months ago almost and asked about the 75 quid deal for recommending a friend and why I couldn't have it... No problem at all, she said she'd do it for me as I'd been with them a few years.

Got mine booked in for next wednesday can't wait!

It really bugs me listening to people complain about Sky, its a voluntary product, if you don't want to pay for it DON'T! I pay for it and love it, i don't have the movies or sports because i'm not into either so my bill is just £29 a month with HD. Its a fair price for all the American HotRod and Garage etc i get to watch!

PS I didn't bloomin well pay over 2k for a HD TV just to mumble over a measily tenner a month either

it's still only an mp4 stream though isn't it? just a wider one lol

About time that we got a better picture though in fairness. The state of Sky SD is laughable sometimes, especially on the 'smaller' channels. Sky1 might be ok, but bravo and similar have really lossy compression, artifactastic...

I remember when Sky Digital was launched to replace analogue, and I upgraded straight away based on the man from Comet's assurance that this was DIGITAL and therefore BETTER... It weren't.

The only person that records things in my home is the girlfriend and luckily the sky+ box is being moved upstairs so she can record all her programmes till her hearts content.

All i am looking forward too is Battlestar Galactica coming back on in HD

the last time i got mine changed the fella told me that they usually give out recon one's, he then gave me a brand new one out of a sealed box, so maybe when your box goes (which it probably will do) insist on a brand new one. mine has been problem free now for over 2 months(touch wood) which is a miracle

Been with them 3.5 years, no new kit or replacements and virginmedia offered a good package which i relayed to Sky during my cancellation call, The chap was very polite and so was I and eventually offered the above to keep us

Package was Sky HD for £59 installed, broadband, sky mix, telephone for £15 a month total + our TV package inc movies on top

£14 a month cheaper than virginmedia in the end in total. I think it was the turnaround dept i spoke too.
