I read a few things on coilovers and they would be nice, but I think I'm gona stick with what I've got. For the road, I was told by a subaru rally mechanic that standard shocks, lowered springs, ALK and a good geo setup was perfect.

Progressive springs are east to compress for the first part of their travel, after which the spring becomes harder to compress, ie stiffer. This allows the bumps and potholes to be taken up and still allow mor composure for hard cornering.
I have coilovers fitted to my impreza and the ride is bloody awful, wouldn't recommend them for daily use, they use a linear, fixed spring rate. I think some eibach lowering springs might be more suitable for UK roads. These have a progressive spring rate and should afford more comfort while retaining decent handling, and of course they lower the car which helps it to handle better from the outset.
My recommendation would be to go for a ride in someone's car who's got the kit/springs fitted, and see whether you like it. Personally i think personal preference is quite personal from person to person.

I use the Eighbach pro kit progresive springs and find it just about right for my use. The car is an Sti so firm ride anyway. I have previously used Tein's and found them to harsh a ride and a handfull in the wet. That was aprox 4/5years ago.

I have just had the Eibach's fitted to mine. It looks nicer already but seems to be no real difference in the feel of the car. Its only been a day so I'll let them bed for a few days and a few miles and see what they feel like then.
