I suppose it all boils down to what type of rock music we individually like at the end of the day. we all like bands for different reasons which is why to stand buy them and buy their albums/singles.

Forgot about them. Saw a lot of concerts years ago and theirs was the best by far. Great choice.

Another to add to the list - Ten Years After

I can't have a "Best" choice, I need a top ten.

In no particular order

1. Queen. Superb technically, and such an eclectic mix of music! Listen to "Breakthru" and I defy ANYONE to not want to sing the chorus! Bohemian Rhapsody is an obvious classic, and I adore "Innuendo" for the lyrics and spanish guitar, includes the line "You can be anything you want to be
Just turn yourself into anything you think that you could ever be" FANTASTIC!

2. Whitesnake. So many band members, but David Coverdales voice and constant sexual innuendo! Loved "Slide it in" and "Still of the night" with Coverdale's soulful sex-talk!

3. Led Zeppelin. A mix of a blues singer with a rock'n'roll guitarist is a mix made in heaven! Stand out track for me is "Kashmir"!

3. Dire Straits. "Brothers in arms" gives me goosepimples. It is on EVERY single playlist on my ipod. The lyrics are brilliant, but the guitar and minimal percussion never detract from Knopflers voice! I love "Private Investigations" and "Sultans of Swing" is such a FUN song!
Lyric "You check out guitar george he knows all the chords
Mind hes strictly rhythm he doesnt want to make it cry or sing
And an old guitar is all he can afford
When he gets up under the lights to play his thing"

4. AC/DC. Just because those guys still sound like they're just having a ball! Obvious track is "Back inBlack" but most of their stuff is easy listening TBH!

5. KISS. Well, "God gave rock'n'roll to ya!" and their shows are legendary!

6. Guns 'n' Roses. TBH it's a HUGE shame that they only made 3 "proper" albums, but Axl Rose and Slash were rare talents, and Izzy Stradlin did write most of the music. Listening to Appetite for Destruction recently, I was amazed how it hasn't aged much. My personal favourite is "Estranged" from Illusion2 but special mention to "November Rain" and of course "Sweet Child O'Mine"

7. Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars. Essentially a glam rock band persona of David Bowie (And people say that Madonna is a chameleon! She has nothing on the Thin White Duke!) but the eponymous "Ziggy Stardust" is a superb song! As a matter of interest, listening to "Space Oddity" through quality headphones is better than through speakers. Bowie recorded the song in monaurel instead of stereo, briefly explained the left channel is different to the right channel, and you can here different effects in each ear!
I RECOMMEND YOU LISTEN TO THIS SONG ON HEADPHONES if you haven't done before.

8. FooFighters. Very playful, the song "Statues" from their latest album is brilliant, but "Learn to fly" is great as well. They also did a mean cover version of "Baker St" thats worth searching out, when Grohl substitutes the word "Crack" for "Booze" in the "Give up the booze and the one night stands" line!

9. Red Hot Chilli Peppers. Contentious, I'm sure, but a cracking band. "By the way" always gets me rocking!

10. The Police. "Roxanne" as a lament to working girls. How could that work? But it DOES!

Can't believe no one has mentioned Status Quo

BTW A big up for Bowie's Ziggy period - not sure it classes as what I think of as rock, but I'll run with it. Best album ever recorded in my opinion.

GNR for me - if you take their best 10 songs you could have an album called the greatest rock anthems of all time.
Shame that their leader was such a gland head for the Appetite For Destruction line up with Slash, Izzy and Duff etc was destined to become the biggest rock band of all time, but greed stopped it dead
So in my opinion, that particular line up of GNR are the greatest rock band of all time, closely followed by the "Lies" line up of GNR who are the second best rock band of all time.

Wasn't "Lies" the same lineup? That album was made of stuff they'd already done before "Appetite" and some live stuff

Matt Sorum didn't join until "Illusion" (Along with Keyboard guy Dizzy?)
after Steve Adler was fired due to drug/alcohol abuse

Pink Floyd are the best band ever... regardless of genre.

Led Zep, Lynyd Skynyd, Black Sabbath during the Ozzie days all get special mention.

Marillion. Every time.

As a reviewer once said: There are lots of bands that rock, but only a few - like Marillion - whose music really moves people.

IMHO They are going through something of a "Floyd esque" 'The Final Cut' phase with their music at the moment, i.e. it's very personal to their lead singer, and some of it is a tad inaccessible, but when they're on form, nothing even comes close to them.

I truly believe they are the best kept secret in UK music and, quite possibly the finest band ever to come out of the UK!

Up to Afraid of Sunlight (especially the title track, utterlybrilliant) and parts of this Strange Engine (man of thousand faces for example) I'd agree. The later stuff has been utter trash. Haven't bothered with the latest, first album I'd not bought. Have bought the new official bootleg box set with the Radio 1 broadcast of "The NEw Direction" from 85. That turned out to be Misplaced Childhood.

I have to say its Queen but there are a lot of class bands mentioned, I have to say Queen after Live Aid back in the day,
All those that went on stage had the same equipment, and just look who stood out on the day,
Even with Paul rodgers they still own the stage at shows like no others do,
Some bands have there fans favorite songs so it picks up and drops a little at times(Oasis gigs are like this)
But queen Gigs are just electric from the 1st song until the end.

For me it's:

Guns n Roses - Shame i was too young to see them live but to me they are everything a rock band should be

Status Quo - I was brought up listening to them as my dad and his 5 brothers are huuuuge Quo fans!

Queen - What more needs to be said, they were fantastic!

I also like some ACDC, but only a few songs. I'm into Metallica, Iron Maiden, Dragonforce and a few others but i'd class them as metal not Rock and Roll

I think that they really lost their way a bit after Marbles, which I really enjoyed. There was so much to listen to on that album every song seemed to have something that made you go: "nice"

"Somewhere Else" was a crashing disappointment; almost like the band were somewhere else when it was being recorded lol.

The new album is a significant improvement, but I still have reservations about Mike Hunter as a producer: he seems to want them to assemble songs from trinkets and special effects rather than a central and strong melody; it makes them sound fussy and overly complicated and bestows the songs with a lack of direction and bite.

There are some great songs on there though. One in particular called "wrapped up in time" deals with the resonance from a broken relationship. I wish I'd had had that song to help me though my last break up. Steve Hogarth really nails how it feels to be left with just memories of someone who was so central to your world. This is what Marillion do so damned well and yet, they seem to be be holding back from it recently.

No question, greatest of all time.

I'm struggling to see the Stranglers as a "Rock" band, tbh.

And another vote for Marillion (again, the earlier stuff in particular) Misplaced Childhood was a work of art (Kayliegh excepted)
