Dry-lining is pretty easy. DIY with some 2x1, a saw, drill, plugs and screws, nails and hammer. Wallpaper over MDF to get a neat finish. It won't be as good as a well skimmed plaster wall, but more flexible with regards to cabling and insulation.

I'll try and pop over in the next few days, and I'll bring that amp and DVD over sometime. You may as well use them until you buy whatever kit you're planning as they're just using up space in my house.

Al, may have a man to to fit the DG he may also be able to source it, not sure... I'm not sure about what he charges, but I'll have a word with Andre for his number... if its silly and blows the budget then if we can source some I'll give you a hand fitting it, I've fitted all my windows and 3 doors and its pretty easy really. I've got triple gazing in the front rooms, and that really cuts the noise down... although the best way is to fit secondary glazing...
I had to get a hand to lift mine as each panes weight was about 70kg
Hope Kat's good with the beercan butties if me and you fit them though

PS get your self up for a cuppa also, have a listen to my setup and a chat ...

Steve. Top lad.

Thanks for coming round mate and imparting some of that knowledge. Definitely put me on a specific track now mate so thanks...

Those measurements?

100 x 66 for the window and as standard size door 37 ish wide...

Glass area is 123" across the diagonal.. a 6m throw!!
This means a 107" wide screen which is too much... will have to come down to approximately 115" to keep it within the 100" width. Still a 5m Throw....

Hi mate. Really waiting on an electrician to quote me for the work and Daz to speak to his DG mate...

Had Phil round to check the plastering so that bit's sorted.

Got a leccy coming tomorrow evening, so once that's done and I've had a few quotes for the DG, as there's not point plastering until both of those have been done, then I'm good to go for the carpet and wallpaper (I think).

As an update, I'm looking closely at the Denon 1909 rather than the Onkyo and an Infocus X9 PJ (720p). The X9 is a really bright PJ and the throw of 4.5 throw seems to be at the very front edge of it's workable distance... but I'll check more...

The leccy is coming with a mate from football; the one I told you about who works fitting AV kit... So I'll have more of an idea about our siting ideas for the racks and PJ itself... I'm also wanting to get some decent front speakers (Spendor S6's) for the front pair and to work well with my HiFi... but the damned budget keeps creeping up...

it's like i said once you know what you want the rest is easy, but without knowing what you want everything else is just an idea. Denon is a good unit it's in the links above if you get it from richer sounds and you get some other bits make sure you dont pay that price for it
X9 seems a good projector wasnt out when i was in the market for one, only thing i would say is people seem to be using hmc filters to help reduce some of the grain as they are abit too bright on a night so bare this in mind if you get one and notice it, as it dosent have a manual adj for grey scale. And dont forget to view a dlp before you buy one to see if you suffer from rainbows

Agreed. I'm pretty set on the Denon and X9 at the mo. Obviously viewing is essential. especially as I'm not sure about rainbows.. we use a DLP HD PJ at work, but it's only driven by a Laptop in an office with the few feet throw, so the picture is tiny. Some of the boys on the AV Forums do reccomend a ND2 filter, so that'll be top of the list when I buy it...

I'm not adverse to buying second hand or ex-demo, so will be looking at that before buying new. I'd probably go for a new PJ as the X9 is new and I'd like to be at the front of the bulb life and know it's history......

projector deffo go new for the price it is , even inc the hmc nd2 it still comes in just over 500 ish, keep your eyes peeled on av forums for sale section i've bought a load of bits and never had any trouble just check there itrader status first, like i said u can view mine any time you want to see about rainbows, granted it aint the x9 but it's still a dlp, want to rack your brains aswell as regards my htcp as i want to cat5 it around the house but wanted find the best way to do it

ps-new you'd go for the denon, thats why i mentioned it as there a smart looking unit

As Dave will testify, audio quality is where I'm at, and the moment you mentioned it's sonic advantages over the Onkyo (backed up in tests), then that's what I short listed.

Just obtained the Avia Home Theatre setup disk and had a play on my home TV setup (non-Surround)... some interesting features and test cards with regards to setting up the audio and video... tuned my TV with it tonight (I need to complete the colour and tint with RGB filters) and it looks much smarter already, even without the final colour tweaking...

Just need a sound meter to ensure the (really) comprehensive audio setup gets the best attention... I'm looking forward to tweaking that side!

Happy to discuss Cat5. especially if you've got the trunking runs to do it (or even when you have your floorboards up). Much better than wireless (read speed and security here)..

how much info does the cd have on as regards colour/picture setup, i ordered a dve disc and as yet it hasnt turned up and i seem to be getting no where with them so i will defo borrow it if ithas the same kinda thing on it . as regards the cat 5 it isnt so much for internet it's to be able to send the video/sound from the htcp into multiple rooms, i need to be able to split the 2 from the htcp into 12 (6 of each) if that makes sense, it needs to still take it as a 1080p signal into the different rooms no trunking or floor boards up required.

No probs on the disk... I played with the basic setting last night to adjust the TV and it's made the picture more natural... I need more time to play with the dozens of test cards though. The audio set-up with the pink / white noise, various freq testers for all speakers and Sub.., crossovers and sound stage testing seem pretty comprehensive... As I don't have surround set-up for the TV, that will have to wait... Only thing I'm missing is the RGB filters needed to set-up the colour and tint..... But I've fired off an email to the company... PM sent regarding the disk itself...

Interesting work needed for the Cat 5. I'll have to do some R&D on the way a HTPC deals with the signal. but it seems you need a simple switch or hub and a lot of cable...... But you said no trunking or floorboards up required... how you getting it around the house? You already got risers and room cable feeds available?

The higher end Yamaha amps come with their own mic for optimising the amps settings to the speakers with the amps own white noise and frequency test signals....

Al, if you're considering recessed halogen downlighters in the 'manroom' I can recommend THESE. Available in 7, 9, 11 and 13W they offer massive cost savings over the usual 50W GU10's. I've just fitted them in my kitchen and will be putting them in the bathroom next week, saving me 696W of juice when all lit. Light output and spread is good (I went for the full monty 13W), much better than LED's which so far are crap (but will probably get better as development progresses). Almost no heat output either (a sign of their efficiency).

No mate. I won't be going LV as I will be using the existing lighting cable from the big strip lights that were in the shop and I'll probably be going with the Varilight remote dimmers... running from a Harmony one...

Will no doubt run with one or two of the nicer Ikea Halogen lighting bars or similar spots.

Not 'LV' Al, 'LW' (low wattage). Still 240V but massive consumption reduction. No dimming available though.

OK.. Thought they'd be LV.
Problems with the dimming aspect though using some of the remote dimmers...

You'll have to come around one day and take a look.. probably best after the main stuff's been done and it's a blank space read to take the kit...
