Its a car programme (well loosely), its on prime time TV, it has to appeal to the millions or it will lose its spot.
At the moment they seem to be able to do almost anything and get away with it because of its huge viewing figures.

Bearing that in mind, its amusing entertainment, I'm really pleased to see it back .................

I though TG was alright last night. Not Brilliant, but alright.

Wish they'd had more on the lambo V's GT2 though.

Truck feature was entertaining if a little predictable at times (as mentioned, I knew Hammond would leave the trailer behind) and you also got the obligatory crashing into each other.

Clarkson hurting himself smashing through the brickwall was good too.

Star in a reasonably priced car??? Gave me time to go for a p1ss, and make a cup of tea.

Roll on next Sunday.

Although I'm not looking forward to the M3 V's AMG feature. Been done several times in Evo now. Didn't read the last one.
AMG will be more tyre smoke, M3 will win for being more predicable at the limit.

they bring on a lambo and a Porsche thrash them round the track and dont even tell you what the porsches time was"was it good was it bad what time was it?"is the porsche better value for money the show is pointless.apart from seeing that nice bit of stuff behind clarkson of course.
its been well known that car tv programs have been staged for years to make it more interesting to the audience.bring back the old style format of top gear where tests where tests and cars were abused usually by tiff remember him locking the handbrake on an MG slowing the car then accelerating away with the rear wheels locked but prob cant do that no more due to political reasons.

James May was on R5 earlier. One of the presenters gave him a bit of a hard time about TG being staged, and for them all being out of touch!

To the people who keep saying 'If you don't like it don't watch it' how the hell do we know if its going to be bad or not.

Anyway, was 'okay'.Looks like some good stuff to come though.Didn't smile at the lorry bit.Said to the wife 'that will now catch fire' and hey presto.

Wondering if they will beat my all time favourite 'sketch' from the past...blasting through the mountains in the exotica and May ends up in his underwear

It was OK - the lambo was interesting

The truck "sketch" was pitiful. Hammond "forgetting" to hook it up once was bad tele, twice was car crash tele It didnt get any better from that point on, but I stuck with it anyway as it was more entertaining than come dancing or a repeat of something on sky 1.

I think I'll keep it on the planner and record it so I can watch it when there is nothing better on, but if the first episode of the new series is to be their flagship showing, I will be sad to say that this show is, alas, well and truly past it

Thumbs down

Hammonds hair do, oh dear oh dear

Everything completely staged, like Clarkson reversing into May

Bring on the canned laughter I say

I don't agree with the show as past it (Jezza maybe), the production elements from older TopGear are there, it's just they need more road testers and focus more on road tests.

i definately like the old school format, top gear used to be a programme for car enthusiasts. Now its just proper prime time 'lets appeal to everyone' tv, people watch it who arnt into cars, thats not what it used to be like! i too find the whole programme really staged and cringe worthy. saying that, i still watch it most weeks

I wrote in another TopGear thread about Sue Baker (one of the original testers), in 1981 she did a 3,000 mile drive in a silver Vauxhall Cavalier 1.6 from Westminster and across France.Them roadtesters went to them lengths, just to test average cars.Jeremy won't do that because he is a snob, and no doubt that was rubbing off a little bit.

I love these threads, anyone who post anything negative about TG gets negged, sorry, but that's pants. As others have said, you can't not watch it because you didn't(PAST TENSE!) enjoy this weeks episode, not unless you've got a time machine. I enjoyed some of it, but not much. I've always had a liking for Lambo's so that was OK, and I was LMAO when Clarksons showoff stunt backfired. I mean, come on, several tons of truck meeting a couple of tons of bricks at 56 MPH, that's schoolboy physics for "that's going to hurt", and a bit of heavy guage chicken wire is really going to protect the driver Other than that

From this : YouTube - Top Gear Episode from 1989 Sierra Cosworth

to the TG of today.

Maybe a mix of the 2 would be better.

Actually all the lorries were braced with extensive roll cages. They're stupid but not that stupid. There was very little 'factual' content in the programme, it was mainly three blokes acting like idiots with some very big vehicles. I think Clarkson at al could do with being reined in slightly, a bit of tomfoolery can be mildly amusing but contrived stunts aren't. I mean who didn't predict a fire in Clarkson's trailer?

That is going to be $hite TV frankly.

Any berk can test drive one of the hundreds of 'normal' cars in their own time, on a whim! So why would they put that on prime time TV?

You know what? I've been thinking about this a lot and all I can say about Top Gear is that it entertains me for an hour, it makes me laugh and it makes me feel good that there are other people out there that share the same (childish? ) sense of humour that I do.

The car thing is just an aside, the real thing fabout the programme for me is the entertainment factor and it gives me that in spades

+1. IMO Sunday nights are boring, tv wise, with little worth watching as a rule. Now there is something which fills an hour, entertains me, with some cars thrown in. I think the programme is more about general entertainment, than a car review show, and maybe it's taken that format, as it pulls in more people. You can't please all the people all the time, I guess.

I don't mean just do road tests and nothing else, get Tony Mason back so he can tell us about the goodwood festival and other famous events across the globe.Lets see him, James and Quintin Wilson going to auctions for 2nd hand classic cars etc. Also bring Tiff back to race supercars with the stig on the track or something.Chris Goffey could do a bit he is a petrolhead. Some people mentioned William Woollard.

Why would you want to watch a review of a car, go to a dealership and drive one yourself! My god, how do you people get by in life, how do you pick your washing powder, how do you pick your underpants without a TV show to tell you which is best?

As for bring back Tony Mason, Chris Goffey et al, you don't need a TV show, you need a time machine, you're stuck in the '80s ffs!

Top Gear is entertainment, enjoy it for what it is, not what you think it should be...or just don't watch it!

Well if I was going to spend 20K on undercrackers, I'd probably want to see George Clooney giving them a test drive to check the elastic and their torque.

As for not watching it, they might have another Lambo on and I'd miss it, and besides, if I don't know what I didn't like about each show, how could I pi$$ off the TG massive

From what your missus told me, your 20k would be better spent on something to fill out the undercrackers you already have!
