ok to END this silly arguement youve started, :

I, Ashley B, on this subaru forum do say that some of the posts in this thread I found deeply offensive and politically incorrect to say the least. I have expressed my views and apologise for using the wrong terminology when expressing them, on this forum.

you can stop now bravo

And yes I do find it offensive taking the pp out of people's appearance just as calling someone a 'spaz' is as to me that is an abbreviation for spastic. BUT the point is being offensive does not automatically = being racist.
That I completely agree with, but the pic of Obama on the note clearly is a racist stereotype and I think that is what ash is getting at.

TBF, it may be important whether this is deemed as racism or just not politically correct, but the other issue at hand is that people have in fact been offended regardless. Some of the posts may be bad tatse, but what gets me, is that I honestly don't think they were intended to be offensive as such. I also don't think they were malicious, just an attempt at humour, funny or not.

However, if we accept that this sort of thing is unacceptable, we also have to apply that thinking to whatever other threads come up which could equally cause offence. So no more comments on tall/short/fat/thin people, no 'jokes' about hair colour, religion, sexuality, the list could be endless. Where would it end? Jokes are usually born out of our differences as people, and yes, at times can border on offensive, I have been offended on here before, but if I can tell something is an attempt of humour, I laugh it off. If I honestly believe someone is really trying to be offensive, then I will speak out.

I'm not saying it's right or wrong to make jokes about someones' skin colour, but if we say it's not, then we will all have to start treading very carefully in what other things we 'mock'.

Nice to see how an original thread has turned into an infracticon fest.

prhaps if we ALL applied some common sense, this thread wouldnt have

turned into a slanging match

B.0. didnt get to where he is today by being a shrinking violet, nor is he

unaware of the predjudices he faces.

Its clear that there a few on this thread who seem to revel on pushing the

"humor" angle to the limit, and given the current PC state we all seem to be

hung up on, it seems a rather unwise thing to do.

You were acting like a nonce.. as if you were heart broken by what had been said Or were you joking? As my good old Dad used to say to me when I was 7 or 8 years old, 'take it on the chin... you're big enough and ugly enough'.

The point is, will this "very carefully think- before- you -type" stuff actually change the way those people "really" think about physical differences? Most probably not. That is why IMO it's good to see some open posts on forums; to know what people's real views are, and to know what they really are about. Some people repeatedly menifest their strong views over physical and racial differences. Sometimes with harmless, humour packed jokes (totally acceptable IMO), sometimes with anger and hatred. Not always it's the same people, but sometimes it is. So, physical and racial differences must matter a lot to them, I suppose? Let them live with their preferences, I say. As Cool says, one should be big an ugly enough to take it on the chin, full stop.

Anyway, I found this clip on line today>

Racism 'preventing British Obama'

'Institutional racism' is preventing a British Obama, claims equality chiefUS President-elect Barack Obama would never have become the British Prime Minister because of "institutional racism" in the Labour Party, the head of Britain's equality watchdog has claimed.
Trevor Phillips, chairman of the Equality and Human Rights Commission, told The Times: "If Barack Obama had lived here I would be very surprised if even somebody as brilliant as him would have been able to break through the institutional stranglehold that there is on power within the Labour Party."
He said the Conservative Party had made more progress when it came to its selection procedures than Labour.
He said: "The parties and unions and think-tanks are all very happy to sign up to the general idea of advancing the cause of minorities but in practice they would like somebody else to do the business. It's institutional racism."
Instituitional racism is the highlight in above script; co-product of the social racism in this century. I thought it was interesting.

A mature post...
There is absolutely no excuse for racism and even less excuse for bleating about everything you don't agree with or felt 'insulted by' as if it ruined you're life.

Hiding racist views inside so-called "jokes" is cowardly IMO. Racist comic Bernard Manning was a perfect example and we all remember how controversial the return "joke" by Trevor McDonald turned out to be.

So, saying "its a joke" doesnt always cut it. Just because you hide something in a joke doesnt make it acceptable.

Shouldn't someone open this discussion up to allow our ginger haired jocks and leek eating welsh sheep ******* members an opportunity to discuss their feelings towards racism...

....mind you that's assuming they're sober enough to actually type at 14:50 on a Saturday afternoon

Fat boy Manning (oops, that may have been a fattist comment) was well and truely marginalised by his own work. No need for Treavor McDoughnut (oops a foodie comment) to lower himself. Us 'educated types' can make of Manning, and his like, as is deserved. Protecting me/'us' by preventing these nuts from airing their views is protecting the nuts from public humiliation.
Let them stand up and identify themselves

BTW, who is the mixed race guy? Honestly I don't know who you refer to.
