With regards to the gamer tag thing, is it specific to the machine/person/internet connection?? This will all be new to me.
You create the account when you set it up to play online, doesn't cost anything on the PS3 I think you can have several Tags per PS3 console, but not tried it myself.
The console remembers who was logged in last but don't think the TAG is tied to the hardware
