I know, and thanks to the heat and stresses involved, the airframe was apparently in worse shape than the engines

But it definitely achieved the desired effect on the Yanks

Apparently, according to the pilot, the Lightning involved only managed it because it was a particularly 'hot' example of the breed

That story only highlights what an absolute travesty BA's decision to ground Concorde was

They were worried enough about it's supposed potential to initiate the program that brought us the F-15

Yeah, they thought that the Mig-25 was a real good all rounder, they were wrong!

At least the Eagle turned out to be good.

I have been fortunate enough to see and hear! both these aircraft at airshows, and to me they are just about the most evil planes i have ever seen, SAAB Viggen and Draken.

I wonder if the team at the CIA that made the MiG 25 assessment was the same lot that did the evaluation of Saddam's WMD capability

heard that story a few times before, military jets could catch concorde but none could stay with it for more than a few minutes as the military jets would be running on afterburner and concorde wasnt. So they'd start to run out of fuel and have to slow down.

True-but I am not about to get "done" for it!

I thought the Eurofighter would take a bit of beating for noise, especially on take-off.

I've never heard anything louder than this. That includes 6 GR4's hovering along the display line at Farnborough, and being 150ft from Concorde as it rotated.

Small kids cried, mothers screamed, the video on my camcorder was destroyed into static.

IT WAS FECKIN AWESOME!!!

I've seen a few B1Bs but somehow I've never seen one take off. An impressive machine though!

We saw the Vulcan at Leuchars a bit back, blinking awesome!

That would be castle motors, not a scrapyard.

Our offices where just outside Farnborough Airfield and we'd get to see them practice during the two weeks the show was on. Not particularly helpful when you're trying to provide telephone support and an F16 screams overhead but I loved the noise and spectacle.

The Lightning will always be my favourite aircraft (my dad did his engineering apprentiship (sp) on the Lighting construction line).

My uncle was on the design team for the radar at Ferranti. Apparently anybody who wasn't part of the team got the impression they were lazy bu99ers as they were never doing any work. It was simply because work had to stop to protect the restricted info and parts etc.

In relation to the power of the radar, my uncle once told me a story of his boss leaving his car under one of the beacons in the car park they used to calibrate the radar. Not sure how true this is but the story goes that after two weeks on holiday the boss returned to find the paint on his car had been stripped clean off.

Also, my uncle's brother in law was an electrician at RAF Leuchars. He lived just off base and his wife (my aunty's sister) used to complain that the Lightning's made the crockery jump around on the shelves when they took off.

Again, probably more urban legend than fact but apparently he was servicing the landing lights when a call went out stating an american fast jet would be making an emergency landing due to failed under-carriage. They would be erecting large nets at one end in case he didn't stop in time. The story goes that the pilot landed from the wrong end and due to the arrestor hook deploying (but not the landing gear) he managed to catch the top of the nets without realising and promptly ripped them (and their concrete mounts) out of their location and dragged them several hundred feet down the runway causing plenty of damage in the process.
