Evo VII - Discuss

Robski,
Ah, i see where your coming from!
We could argue all day about the cars looks - only a mother could love an ugly baby and all that!
The girlie comment was just my subtle sense of humour.... But use it as you wish!!!
I guess its down to how you use the car. I travel approx 100 miles a day every working day - so the interior does matter to me and the quietness and comfort is important. I like that - i get to work less stressed out. But i also want to thrash when i can. So its a compromise. Thats why i bought it. I wouldnt have bought the mark I.
My comment about the Evo etc reviews is that you've read its a tad slower (but dont say if you've actually driven one to compare - so where's your argument???) and therefore think its crap. Because you like to thrash. And BHP is everything. I'm saying its the sum of parts thats important for the drivers such as myself who actually (god forbid) commute in one. And in that repsect its a better car (in my opinion). People have judged the car without getting there ***** in the seats (like yourself i imagine). Thats unfair.
Can you actualy physicaly notice .4 of a sec difference to 60? How often do you travel 0-100 miles per hour and how may times does it really matter that your getting there a tad slower other than down the pub? How many times are you gonna meet anyone who wants to race you? Well i can physicaly notice the improvements inside the car. I doubt you can.
My own personal belief is that (like when i go biking) it's the driver that counts. And better handling outweighs marginal performance differences - especially on todays Gatso/Police-speed-trap infestated roads. If you like risking your licence then fair enough. I need mine to make a living. If your scared of cornering at high speeds as you say you are, and im not (in my car), im going to go faster than you arent i? Even in my slow old WRX.
Thats why i'm going on a "Wetter the Better" course to improve myself. I figure that in terms of performance driver training is cheaper and makes you quicker than another 17bhp/tonne.
Each to there own mate. Hope you enjoy your car as much as i do!!
The Evo VII is probably gonna be a bit more sedate like my car!

Quite like it. Not too over the top maybe wont get too much unwanted attention from the wrong kind of people.
Better than the new Scooby I feel. But until its been avaliable for a while it hard to judge dynamics

...new MY01 WRX and can i say that anyone who has an opinion on its looks should really see the car in the flesh - it looks loads better in real life than in the pictures. OK they could have made it look better - but its not that bad!
James[/quote]
I'd agree with that, after seeing one at the RAC on the Subaru service area.
Owain McRae.

Interestingly enough a member of the IM Group was quoted yesterday as saying 'The new Mitsubishi looks more like an Impreza than the new Impreza'.
Interesting to note that even they still refer to the MY01 as an Impreza.

sorry mate, i definately dont agree with u. if i wanted something quick, but liveable with, i'd say an accord type r would perhaps be more to your taste, or even an m3.
personally, i think the evo6 is revolting, even though its undeniably quick. i think the evo 7 looks much better, and to be honest i think it looks how a new scooby could have looked.
i think the my01 is perhaps the most stupid looking piece of trash on 4 wheels ive ever seen. i recently bought a my00 because after seeing the my01, i couldnt bear the thought of having to travel 100 mph everywhere so that i was never in one place long enough for people to point and laugh, and for clowns asking me to use it in the local circus.
can subaru seriously believe i'll buy one of these dogs when there are equally, if not quicker cars around? i'd take an evo7 over a my01 any day of the week.
hope i havnt offended anyone, but still, i aint the one spending £20,000 plus on a my01, and the spending another small fortune making it look right, and go right!

James,
"I wouldnt have bought the mark I."
You are exactly the type of person Subaru are looking to buy the car. Based on the old cars reputation, they want to sell to the mass market, so they have had to produce a more acceptable car. So that the general populace go "well its an impreza, but its better now because they have put a nice interior in it" so it competes with the mundano a bit better.
"People have judged the car without getting there ***** in the seats (like yourself i imagine). Thats unfair."
Its not unfair, it looks so ****e I would not buy one. Simple. Even went a had a look after all the "they look better in the flesh tyoe comments". Maybe after 10 pints they do, but not before.
I would buy another type of car, probably EVO, but maybe I would switch to a different type, e.g. Elise. I know that at the moment I would not buy a MY01 period.
"Well i can physicaly notice the improvements inside the car."
Just a tip, but watching the road is usually better than admiring your nice interior. IMHO anyway. If interior is that important to you, buy an Accord type R, or a fast Merc or BMW. All these **** all over MY01 interior.
"And better handling outweighs marginal performance differences"
But as I said, its virtually impossible to find the limits of the old car at legal speeds anyway. Unless you are happy to travel round blind bends at speeds where you are never going to stop if there is a reason why you need to.
"If your scared of cornering at high speeds as you say you are"
I never actually said this. To be honest its less fun cornering in the scoob on most roads than a lot of other cars if you are talking about actually driving it, because it is just sooo capable. If you want fun, go and buy a ****e handling old capri, then corner at the same speed as your scoob, its going to give you much more driver satisfaction. What I did say was "you just need to get the courage to use it, it took me probably 9 months to really start to believe in the car". Thats because I was used to a heavily modified powerful FWD car (which did handle very well). This was a very very different beast to the scoob, the feedback was much greater, I could corner at 99% of the potential of the car every day. What did you drive before? I found the switch to AWD a challenge as most people I know did. Plus I dont use it everyday.
robski
p.s. and for the record all my mates who have no vested interest in which looks better prefer the old version. With comments like "it looks more purposeful", "the new models just going the same way as all the other manufacturers" etc etc

Thats true Robski, at the end of the day, sales figures will tell the biggest story.
I have to be a little negative (if you own a 01 Scoob), and say that Mitsubishi will trounce Subaru in new sales. Used sales of Scoobs will most likely skyrocket, but Mitsubishi are in a unique position at the mo.
They have a massive legend on their hands, every car buff knows the Evo 6, and so few peeps have them.
By making the 7 a slightly toned down version, and (in all likelyness) making it more widely available (and cheaper?), they will be tapping into the 6's status.
Subaru gained all that with the pre 01 model, everyone wanted one, and you could get one for a reasonable price, in reasonable quantity, now Mitsu are following suit.
Unfortuanately, Subaru have gone into battle with something that a large majority of Subaru fans dislike.
These are the people who they should have impressed, because if most (MOST, not all, James) dont like it, you've lost a large proportion of your sales base, and it is less likely to attract new buyers from different markets.
Sorry, I always post sooo long, Ill just shut the hell up, and eat another one of my 3 pack Cadbury's Caramel Eggs (they're back!!).

Did anyone buy a Mk1 car based on looks? Talking of Jeremy Clarkson, he said the EVO 6 looked "like a badly made washing machine". You dont buy these cars for there looks alone do you? Certainly not performance cars? So the issue isnt that great. Its more of a "can you live with it" issue. I reckon in a few years time everyone will be used to them and carry on the flame as normal. I think people are disapointed with what it COULD have looked like rather than the actual product.
How can you rate the Mk1 on the list - its butt ugly!!! The new cars not as bad!!! - ok - so im gonna work on it - but ive seen one in the flesh with the WRC kit on and that looks awesome. Give it 6 months and there will be kits available.
PS If you ever buy a mark II Normski i hope a bolt of lightning strikes you down!!!!

James the quote from Elton John - does this reflect your music choice? First thing I'd put on if I got in my wrx, I can hear myself now "yes a bit of elton john should push me along quite nicely....like a candle in the wind"
ON THE EVO... front vents in front of the wheel please see Vectra CD ( I think never look that closely at vaxha no can't even spell it.)
My Scoob well it is disappionting isn't it still can't afford one or an evo so MY94 WRX keeps me happy.

I tell you what i like this notice board stuff - getting into a heated debate and upsetting people in
my first week!!! You even quoted my last note!!!!!
On the cornering thing. Oh well - i never said i liked Ford Pumas but hey - its a laugh ain’t it!
I totally agree with what you say - they are moving to a different market. But they aren’t trying to scare off you MKI drivers like you think (sorry – have read) they are. That’s my point. Its still a great car!!!!
Moving markets is not IMHO necessarily a bad thing. Do you accept different opinions? I guess I’m in that new market – so why not start a campaign to ban people from posting on the bbs scoobynet that enjoy some refinement as well as the power. Lets burn some crosses and weed out all us “commuters”. Seeing as you’re an “ex heavily modified powerful FWD car (which did handle very well)” driver I can see I’m wasting my breath aren’t I?
I’m a biker - so i wanted something quick and yet something you don’t get wet in when it rains. Scoobys rule - i loved the Mk1 ("old car" gets your goat doesn’t it!) and really wanted one. But I had to commute in it, and when I tested one (IMHO) it seemed a bit harsh for the 90% of the time (when I’m usually in a traffic jam) I’m not using the performance.
Then the new WRX came along and I test drove it (yes – I actually got further than looking at it!!) and decided it was bloody fast and yet a bit more refined - and that it was a better bet than the Hondas and other BMW rubbish. I could excuse the crap interior more than I could the MkI. So it was a much easier choice. And there are less of them on the road at the moment. I can see your next comment coming already – so ok - if it stays that way its fine by me – I won’t be complaining.
So I got one. It’s rapid and comfy. I had to get the Sports seats cause im too broad for the buckets – so that will give you something to laugh about. You aren’t deaf after 20mins on the motorway. (if I had it just as a lark about I wouldn’t mind that). People can actually hear me on my car-phone!!! I can scare myself to death in it (still not like my bike tho). And I don’t want a Beemer or a Merc because I’ve got my dream car. Thanks mate but im very happy with it. So quit pissing on other peoples fire when you haven’t even driven one for chrisake! Its shortfalls in the speed department (which you may notice I did admit were its performance) can be sorted with a trip to Prodrive if you want. And all for the price of a 318!!! Or what you probably spent modifying you FWD car. But you can live with it much easier – trust me. I know. I live the reality.
I can physically notice the difference inside. Come on – you don’t have to use your eyes to notice things you know!! Or perhaps the extra thrills you get in your car over mine have muted your senses. Mmm….
I’m a crap driver so I’m gonna get driver coaching so i don’t wait 9 months to get to grips with it. I do not care if it’s a tad slower. Why do you? You don’t even own one or profess to have driven one for long. In fact the best you’ve managed is to “look” at one. So how can you form an opinion? Oh yes – you read like the rest of us. And as Elton John often says, you should always believe what you read! TRY DRIVING ONE!!!
It doesn’t look ****e (IMHO) - your mum probably loved you when you were born didn’t she???? I like the looks. IMHO I prefer them. But that’s me and I’m arguing with 4511 (last count) scoobynet users who have a MKI. So I loose! Your all right and I’m wrong. I think my bike looks cool, and because every ones got one, bikers with the same one think its cool and that everyone’s else’s bikes are ugly. Same here.
So here’s a voucher for you 10 pints mate!!!!
By the way – Fast Blokes pic of the Evo VII changed my mind – its great (oh no – I’ve judged it without seeing one – that goes against my principles!!!!).
James
P.S. If you want the rush - go buy a bike. Try cornering one of them at 99%. Cars are for pussies. Like me.

I seems for you guys money is't worth mentioning. To me it seems a bit weird to compare an Impreza01 to an Elise or Evo. With the price-difference Subaru could have made the car lighter and faster but hee, it's much cheaper. I for one can't afford an Evo and i think there's no better value for money than an Impreza01. It may not be perfect, but it's cheaper than a 318..
The looks of the new car are not that great i think so i had a testdrive in some other cars. Seat 1.8T, Honda R, Celica VVTL-i, Volvo S60 T5, well, they all are fine machines but they do not have the total package (and handling capabilities) of the new Impreza. It may have its flaws but it beats the competition. It could have been quicker, lighter, but not for the price. And you can't please everyone..

James,
this thread is now boring, just like the MY01
your original comments were that it looked better in the flesh. Well yes marginally, but its still ****e.
Subaru IMHO have done themselves no favours by trying to go mass market, they are now in direct competition with the mass market maunfacturers hot versions, where as previously they were a class above.
Maybe they will see sense, I hope so

Cars, like choice in clothes or girls, is personal, so there are going to be no minds changed in this.
Generally, the new Scoobs looks are disliked, it doesnt look agressive, and certainly doesnt look like a rally dervived sports car, those are facts, whether you like the facts or not, is down to personal choice.
What Subaru have done is made a car with love em or hate em looks, which I believe will have a negative affect on sales. The old car was a lot more likeable in the looks department.
Also, performance has been blunted, bare figures show this, but for some people, the interior and ride quality improvements make up for this, for others it doesnt.
Now, personally, I would have to say you would have difficulty selling one to a blind man, unless they were a huge Hyundai fan, but there will still be people who buy them, just like some peeps buy Suzuki Swifts.
Point being, we can all argue our points till we're blue in the face, but some people will still like it, and some will hate it.

1) MY00 the "classic" model
2) EV06 just a brute
3) EVO7 less in ya face, MY00 imitation
4) Hyundai coupe
5) model T
6) MY01. soon to be on

it will be interesting to see who has the better resale prospects in a few years.....
MY00 or MY01
no matter what you say, i'm with robski on this one, although i'm trying to avoid personal attacks.
james, doesnt it bother you that you are having to spend your OWN money on BASIC things like changing the headlights?!!!
the point of the original thread was how does the new evo 7 compare to the old one. well, opnion seems mixed, i for one think it looks better, almost as handsome as the pre-01 imprezas.
if the MY01 car wasnt a subaru, but perhaps a daewoo, would you still have bought one?
if you are seriously trying to convince me that the new shape is good, then can i please have your autograph Mr Wonder
don't spend the money on a headlight conversion, call a window tintting firm, get the limo black film fitted, it will save you a lot of embarrassment in the future.
finally, when you look at your noddy car, ask yourself, deep down, you REALLY think its worth the money..and all the money you are gonna have to spend on it......hmmm, £20k?....oh ****!!

if you are seriously trying to convince me that the new shape is good, then can i please have your autograph Mr Wonder
don't spend the money on a headlight conversion, call a window tintting firm, get the limo black film fitted, it will save you a lot of embarrassment in the future.
finally, when you look at your noddy car, ask yourself, deep down, you REALLY think its worth the money..and all the money you are gonna have to spend on it......hmmm, £20k?....oh ****!!
