Buying expensive watch on line?

I'd say I'm a man and have proper wrists but a lot of these watches look about that size above in real life!
As to the thread...I'd certainly prefer to step into a proper shop and haggle if it came to a watch rather than buy off the net

A less than perfect non-date without box, papers and from a questionable source perhaps.
What though would be the point in that?

Thanks for all your comments so far, well most of them
I know what some people think of Tag's.... However, I like them, I think 1.5K is plenty to spend on a watch and I have wanted one for a good few years so decided my 30th would be a good time to get one
Regarding the post about having a Tag because can't afford a Rolex etc etc - it's not the fact I can't afford a Rolex, for example, I could go out and buy a couple of them tomorrow if I wanted (not being big headed here but you get my point) but I don't want to spend 2-3k+ on a watch regardless if I have the cash for one or not.
Besides the fact I don't even like the look of the Rolex's, look too plain and boring to me.
I was originally looking for one around 1k but found models around this area were battery models so decided to spend the extra few hundred quid and get an automatic model.
As many have suggested, I think I will try haggling and see where that gets me at my local high street stores.

Despite your poor taste in watches I wish you good luck. Play hardball, you should be able to get a sizeable discount on a TAG which should go some way to reducing the huge hit you will take in instant depreciation.
Who knows this first 'good' watch might start you on the path to buying somthing decent.......they can become addictive.

It depends on the value of the watch as to how much you can haggle off in highstreet retailers.
Maximum my wife gives is 10% but watch value must be more than £1000 in order for her to give this discount. It's more like 5% on £500-£1000 and sod all on <£500
And its only if you ask for it, majority of people are too embarrassed.
But if you know the right faces, you can get 30% and even 40% discounts on the more expensive watches

Shows you how much mark up/profit there is in watches!
I'm a Patek Phillipe(sp) fan.Doubt I'll ever get one.
Presume they cost about £500 to make and then are flogged for £10,000.
Obviously I just made these figures up...but I wonder how far off the mark I am?

Perhaps like me he doesn't like the idea of giving grubby little backhanders to some middleman on an internet forum and would prefer to make his own deal.

Well, each to their own mate, not everyone likes the same stuff
I'm not buying a watch in the hope of the value increasing etc so depreciation isn't an issue for me.

Got a nice Patek Phillipe tucked away somewhere.
Only joking!! Couple of G Shocks that do the job for around £100 a piece. No servicing, batteries last two years, I can abuse them without worrying, blah blah blah.

Yes I have, The majority of Rolex look like only an old granda would wear!! so out of date when it comes to looking fashionable.
Also with regards to ppl only buying a Tag cause they cant afford a dearer watch.
I can get Breitling at cost price, if anyone wants an idea on the mark up of some models it is usually 50%-60%!!!!!
I choose Tag as I like it. Nothing to do with cost.
Tag are certainly not cheap watches either! A Casio is

Once again, I find expensive and flashy watches (unlike genuinely classy but pricey ones like Patek and Panerai) are generally worn by those than "think" they are very well off and want to shout about it.
Again I use the example of three sets of relatives - all worth millions, none with a flash watch.

I ask because your idea of 'fashionable' seems about as out of date and naff as the items alluded to above.
Hot watches would be something like a Hublot Big Bang, certain Panerais or a Rolex Steel Daytona (for a woman). Not that I particularly like any of them but I'm damned sure they are the type of thing you see non-sponsored 'fashionable' wealthy people wearing. Not some skag special TAG.
Another point the asking price of the typical TAG may not be cheap by your standards but the construction, quality and design most certainly are.
Guess some people appreciate design classics and others live in a world that smells of stale trans fatty acids.
