Snazy - true enough about labs. We did puppy classes and really look after ours - she's incredibly well trained and obedient but gets lots of love and attention (going out of our way to ensure she doesn't get jealous of the baby) and in great shape. Her only real foible is that she sometimes gets a bit over submissive and nervous of me and goes a bit doo lally - very rare but occasionally happens.
However I think they need a lot of stimulation and exercise - see too many badly trained fat labs around and that depresses me.
I think many husky breeds are stunning but there's no denying that they look a bit like domesticated wolves.

Yup there is a resemblance to wolves. But put pictures of both together, and its easy to see there is a BIG difference between them. But of course you get regular comments like "oh my god is that a wolf"
So this of course leads people to buy them as you say, to look hard.
My last god suffered with getting over excited and pee'ed himself. I got him as a rescue from a family with 4 kids. Never totally overcame the pee'ing thing, but he calmed down over the years. GSD Rotty cross.

I've seen a lot of chavs with Husky style dogs recently.
I'm a bit worried about the "they look awesome" statement on Staffies.
Never had any problems with any labs - black, golden, chocolate (the maddest and hardest to train), green or blue. Anyone read "Marley and Me?" Now that is one hard to look after lab!

I think the reason why staffies get bad press is because they are such powerful dogs and if they do attack (which may be less than other breeds) you're screwed.
I know a guy who had a staffie and it was attacked by an Alsatian, the staffie then killed the Alsatian despite two grown men kicking **** out if it, they just couldn't get the saffie off! The dog was never the same and after a snap at his daughter the poor dog had to be put down, not easy after 8 years of being the perfect dog.
As loyal as the dog will be they were bred for one reason and i'd just be worried that if a child whacked the dog with a toy it may get a little upset.
Some good advice on the thread and i'd too be very careful when buying a dog of this type.

I think Staffies can make perfectly good family pets, but only if the owner knows how to train a dog properly from being a puppy - any large or powerful dog needs to be trained and socialised with other dogs and people.
If the dog is a full pedigree you can check its 5 generation family tree with the KC and see where it has come from.

Got to agree with Mike.
Sadly its the home breeders, that have no experience, and care little about bloodlines that breed 99% of the bad litters, which in turn leads to poor health, bad temprement, and eventually bad press for the entire breed.
Its worth paying the extra to get clean lines.

If you check on any of the dog rescue sites, Staffs are the most common breed they are trying to rehome. I think anyone who saw the BBC program on pedigree dogs and their breeding would probably think twice about any pedigree animal as even some very reputable breeders allow close relative mating and the Kennel Club is happy to register them.

Hi, i went this morning to look at a few litters, one breeder had the litter under the stairs in a cardboard box and the pups didnt look at all happy! the next one was ok but i wanted a black one and they only had brindle and white left, and the 3rd had all black left, and we chose the best looking one imho he's awesome heres a pic we've not long got him home. He is black with a nice little white patch on his chest
checked all the papers and checks out the dad is a pedigree from a 5th generation with a really posh name, also had all the show certificates aswell he's a really nice dog, the mum looks beautiful aswell she is black and white, and might i say how well looked after they all looked, al bedding and together warm in the conservatory, perfect conditions and all the coats nice and shiny

Lovely mate. That was a quick purchase, but sounds like you have checked the right things.
All the best for the puppy, and look forward to seeing the progress pics.
He has a cheeky little face.

He's great though not getting toys or other stuff from petsmart til four o clock so ive got half a pillowcase and cut three strips into it and platted it into one thick plat and tied at both ends and he loves it, cant stop playing with it lol, well chuffed with him he seems really confident

Excellent mate
Aaah behind the scenes stuff eh, well planned out I must say
Remember the rule about toys... they are yours and lent to the dog when YOU permit it
My poor lil bitch is sitting outside in the car while im working for a bit, come into season, so needed to keep them apart.

Staffies make great pets - it's just a shame the scum of this world have decided to make them there mascot. I find it funny that the people who slate these dogs have never had anything to do with them but seem to be experts on the breed.
I have owned staffs for 20 years and never had one attack another dog, mine go out of there way to avoid a fight.
If I see someone who's dog is on a lead I put mine on, if it's off the lead I leave mine and 2 things normally happen they play or there dog attacks mine and he runs off. Staffs are very quick and 9 times out of ten can avoid being bitten.
I have a 9 month old baby and was never worried about them being together, I leave them down stairs together and they get on fine.

As lovely as the picture is and as much as you trust your dog, i too trust mine 100% but would still NEVER leave them unattended with anyone.
Ash he looks lovely, just make sure he is well socialised from now forward with all days and people and be very firm with him, start as you mean to go on as at the end of the day you are the boss and he is a pet...
look forward to seeing pics of him growing.
