Every-one thinks they can paint- they've been doing it since they were three. Unfortunately, it usually looks like a 3 year old has done it. The same could be said for the work of many "painters" too.
Unfortunately, Shabby DIY efforts are now pretty commonplace, and most people haven't seen a top class job to compare with their own gash-ness.
Hence the delusion that decorating is unskilled.

and all these property programmes don't help when they show you 'amateurs' saving money doing the painting on the cheap.

Anyone see that 'how to be a property developer' earlier this year... they made the places look very poor cus of the rusbish quality/finish of the job.

I'd like to see some of these non 'decorators' hang some Lincrusta properly and see how long it stays on.
And then watch them hand trim a hand-printed £150 per roll wallpaper and stick that up, too.

The problem is that we've had far to many DIY telly progs that show them just blowing over houses without prepping or painting straight onto walls after stripping off paper, and obviously on camera the results look ok, but get close up...

Take a walk around B&Q and see the DIY gimps with their £2.00 pack of 10 brushes, B&Q Brilliant White emulsion for a quid and a piece of glasspaper.

I'd love to go and see the masterpiece that is their Sistine Chapel that they're trying to replicate on the woodchip lounge ceiling...

I have a sideline as a handyman and charge 30 quid an hour for painting. Anyone who is rubbishing All Torque for claiming these rates hasn't tried to get someone to do a good job. I suppose it depends what you get in an hour. I have a mate who will paint for £8.00 per hour. I've watched him take 3 hours cutting in a 12*12 room and it looks like a kids painting. It should take half an hour, and it should be perfect, not a couple of mill on the ceiling and then miss a bit. He never uses sand paper, filler or caulk. He leaves paint on the floor, on himself, on the doors, but not always on the walls. Was watching some develop your own house program last night and they paid 'professional decorators' to paint the place. There were roller marks everywhere, gloss on the walls, emulsion on the skirtings. If you charge 30 quid an hour and do a crap job you won't get any more work. If you charge 8 quid an hour and leave a crap finish, people will accept it because you were cheap. If you charge 30 quid an hour and leave a perfect finish you will be turning away work for months to come

theres many a decorator that wouldn't tackle lincrusta, know how to hang it, soak it, or know what to paint it with... after it's been preped for painting.

We did this just over two years ago, still gotta to back and finish it!! long story!! problem with the staircase.

Right to clarify a few things up I work for a company I don`t get no where near £30/hour wish I did though I think i`m worth it. But I do get more than 17k/year if I put in some overtime it is quite a bit more then, My son who I have had working with me since he left school as an apprentice is now on slightly more than 15k he`s 19 btw.
We are a big company and our work nearly always involve working with other trades and usually we work to a tight deadline if the job is managed properly everything runs smooth but more often than not some thing or other will be altered or as in the original posters query a leak has occurred and damaged some finished decorating. My boss has a set rate for things like this which has been agreed when he prices work up as to put any damage done right usually involves a lot more unseen work usually the whole wall will need to be painted or striped and re papered.

Yeah - But applying paint isn't what it is about. My 7yo can both **** and apply paint. She can actually have a **** without anyone needing to help her out, but when she applies paint, I have to spend hours with a sander sorting it out. Getting a finish is what it is about. If you think that pissing and painting are the same, I would have to hate to look at your house

My house has a lovely paint job, I hate poor finishes. I nearly died when my brother tried to help out and made a right mess. Ended up with more work than I started with.

I suppose being a perfectionist doesn't help.

I got quoted £300 for getting the kitchen done, considering there isn`t that much paint on the walls (mostly units and tiles) I thought I`d have a go myself.

After about two hours I was threadders with the whole thing, of course having the wife stick her beak in telling me where I`d screwed up was another story.

Next time I`m getting the experts in, it was a lost weekend!

For a decent time served painter & decorater you'll be looking at £125-£150 a day (well thats the going rate around manchester anyway)

My old man has been in the trade all his life, and seriously works harder than anyone i know, he works alone as he's a fussy bugger, but has a top notch finish, hence he's never ever advertised in his life, and generally works for more affluent people that want the best finish, and normally does any repeat work for them.

Ive seen first hand the terrible finishes people out there dish out, and just like most things in life, you get what you pay for

weigh up what your 'free' times (or your holiday time off) worth to you, for the cost of having someone in to do it properly.

I rarely use painters decorators as usually the quotes are too high. Not a moan just business and economics in action. If they charge the same or less than I earn they may strike a deal - never if more! £30hr ffs???!!! Doctors get less!!!

When I did find a good chap once I was absolutely amazed at his speed and accuracy wallpapering. What would have taken me 3 days he did in an afternoon! Proper professional. Shame we moved as he had a job for life after that

Why shouldn't we earn more than you? Or more than other people?
It really boils my **** when just because I'm only a decorator that I should be treated like ****.

You're the sort of customer I wouldn't work for, even if I had no work at all. I'd rather sit on my **** earning nowt than work for people like you with that sort of attitude.
