Oh yeah, I forgot to say that the PS3 is, apparently, a complete b@stard to develop games for as well, but they are slowly getting it together.

  • It's very fast (much faster than the PSN and more reliable - I get endless dropped connections / games when trying to play on the PS3)
  • Game servers are not reliant on the original publisher to keep them running (so no throwing away games if the publisher shuts down).
  • The service is very "integrated", so the same online protocols / connection methods etc are used for all games. This ensures that the end user experience is essentially the same no matter what game you play. It's very slick, and very easy to find / join / host games.
  • If the original "hoster" drops out, usually the online game will keep running (until everyone exits). Obviously for some games this doesn't make sense (1 on 1 fighting games for example), but when in deathmatches etc it keeps the game going.
It's not free, but it's not expensive either (you can get it for around £2.40 a month if you shop around). Well worth it in my opinion

I tried that, but wireless just isn't fast enough to stream HD video. I'm using ethernet upstairs, but will probably be getting some powerline adapters for downstairs soon, (if I can work out the wiring - they don't work through extension leads apparently).
I must admit, I don't have any problems with playing online with PS3 (obviously I have had the odd disconnect, but no networking offering is perfect!).

Not all games end when the hoster leaves. On Grid for instance, it just changes host, even if you leave mid race, without any disruption.

No matter how cheap it is though, I still think MS should not charge for XBL, it should be a loss leader to get more people on board if it is that good.

I've never managed to get a decent PS3 online game. Almost always have trouble with disconnects etc. Live is soooooo much better (and faster).

Re your other comment, that would one hell of a loss leader. Have you any idea how much money it takes to run an infrastructure like xbox live?

By compaison, look at mmorpgs like world of warcraft etc. You'd pay more for just 3 months subscription to those than you do for a whole year of Live. Makes it seem not so bad value for money

True, but there are other RPG games that charge nothing and give you free updates, I don't know how WOW gets away with it TBH.

I don't understand your comment about XBL being much faster? I play games on there and I have no problems whatsoever, finds games quickly, no lag issues, no disconnects.

Are you referring to the downloading side, which I admit, is slow (well, for updates, for demos it's as fast as my PC)?

Downloading is very slow (painfully so). Whilst in games, I frequently get serious lag from other players, and of course the aforementioned disconnections. I know it's not my connection as the PC, and 360 work abosultely fine (it's a 20Mb cable connection). Never had a dropped connection on Live...

I downloaded wipeout the other day. Took over an hour to download from PSN. A larger game demo downloaded on the 360 the same night came down in 5-10 minutes.

Get the odd disconnect with PS3 but they are very few and far between.

No other issues with online play for me. Never tried the XBL so can't compare but I enjoy going online with my PS3.

Seems hit and miss. Mate at work says his is fine. My cousin has exactly the same problems as me. Seems a bit of a lottery...

Hardly, my cousin has the same connection issues, and he only has a PS3

Wish I knew what was causing it though. It makes anything online with the PS3 pretty much unusable. Xbox, PC and Wii are all fine. Only the PS3 has the problem...

Out of all the so called 'Fanboys' at least Iain puts together coherent and constructive criticism rather than the usual "I don't experience this" or "Blu-ray huuur"

Ive not read all this basically because im sick of the whole PS3 v 360 debate but if anyone wants a cheap 360 there doing them at Comet.

Xbox 360 60gb pro with an extra wireless controller, Kung fu panda, Lego indiana jones, PGR4 and Sega superstar tennis for £166

play.com are doing the same deal without PGR4 or sega tennis for £209.

As opposed to your post which just oozes useful content I like to think Ive offered some decent input as I faced the very same decision last month and it was a close call. Im not going to say a problem doesnt happen on my PS3 if really it does just to make my purchase seem the better choice. I already admitted Xbox live seems a better environment if there are dedicated multiplayer servers provided by MS. Maybe there are for the PS3 as tbh my online game time has been rather limited so far.

Have been loyal to Sony since PS1.

Love the PS3.... But here are my cons...

- Hate the fact that most games seem to be only 720, and not 1080p
- I am 1Gb broadband, and downloading updates and demos is utter sh1te, it takes absolutely ages, wireless or connected
- They could have styled it better
- The orig 40Gb was a woefully small HD, 80Gb much better
- Don't get on with the web browser
- Sixaxis is..err... a bit crap

Apart from that.. love it!

Not trying to diss your post buddy but 1GB broadband???

No games Xbox or PS3 are 1080p as far as Im aware. Only 1080p sources are blu-ray and HD-DVD (whats left of them).

CoD 5 is 1080p. That's what flashes up on the screen as it starts to load anyway, "1080p input"

Most of the others say "720p input" although CoD4 is capable of 1080p, but for some reason I have to "force" it to use 1080p otherwise it seems to run in 720p

On the box it says it's 720p

Wipeout HD is 1080p however. I've seen some other games that are too, but their names escape me.

There ARE games on PS3 that are 'claimed' 1080p, but in most cases, its a sales gimmick. For example Gran Turismo 5 Prologue works in 1080p mode, but in reality its not the true 1920 x 1080, but more like 1440 x 1080, although it all belts along at 60fps so its impressive.

If you have a game for your PC and:

a) it runs great in 1280x720 mode
b) looks sharper, yet starts to judder at 1920x1080 mode

...then I'd sacrifice the sharper graphics and switch back to 1280x720 mode. This is what happened to me with FIFA09 recently.
