Makes me laugh this thread as I have always been accused of being a grumpy tight git when it comes to heating the house

I get the mums at the school telling me off for being cruel to the g/f for having no heating on during the day during school holidays ..why
I tell them that she can wear a jumper and she has some lovely warm socks that I got her

She calls me up sometimes when there is ice on the inside of the windows asking if she can turn the heating on...I sometimes relent

Just gone and checked the thermostat now and sure enough it has magically turned itself all the way up to 25

It comes on at 6 -8.30 a.m and then on again at 5.30 til 10 p.m

First you should know by now that women are good talkers but no doers.

Secondly trying it for a week was 6 days too long.

Thirdly, I refuse to look.

No thermostat as such, just a dial with no markings on the boiler. That set water and heating. That's set to max and then we controll the rooms via thermostatic rad valves

COOL when I go to bed (18c)

24/7 programmable thermo - lloking to replace with intelligent thermo that works out when it needs to come on to make sure the house is at 23c at 7.15am rather than me setting the heating to come on at 6am

i prefer it turned off but the old man's bones start deteriorating...
routine is as follows: he turns it to 23 before going to bed, and i nip out and turn it off after him, secretly

good thing is i live in the middle in a block of flats, and dont feel the cold as both upstairs and downstairs have their heaters on.... and for some reason the old man's room is always colder than mine....

turns out i sleep woth heaters OFF with windows open a tiny bit

'Er indoors doesn't understand thermostats. If she's too cold, the thermostats all go to max. Apparently it causes the house to warm up quicker .

I was thinking I could get one of those digital wireless thermostat controllers so I can hide it out of harms way when I go to work in the mornings
You know just to keep it safe .!!!

I relented and put the heating on during 1/2 term, but it's on
Setting 1 6am-8am @ 21 degrees.
Setting 2 12pm-3pm @ 12 degrees.
Setting 3 5pm-9.30pm @21 degrees.
Setting 4 (night time) @ 9 degrees.

Apart from that, we've got a nice open flame fire - which goes on just to augment the heat. Got 2 dogs who are up and down like feckin "jack-in-the-boxes", so keeping all the doors to the back door closed isn't an option!!LOL!!

And a dual blanket

And to top it all, my fuel bills came DOWN this year!!!

Bargain - be frugal/scrooge

There are a probably a lot of factors which determine whether it's more efficient, to leave the heating on if you're not at home all the time. I only heat the house for 5 hours on a weekday so I turn mine off. Everybody’s situation will be different.

I tried an experiment last night, usually have mine on 24/7 so reset it all for heat only between 5am - 8am then 5pm - 10.30pm..
House dropped to 15 degrees last night and boiler was still on at 7am when I left this morning, I reckon it uses more energy trying to lift from 15-20 degrees than it does ticking over at 20 degrees 24/7.
The hot water was also put on timed but to come on 30 mins before heating.
I live in a victorian end of terrace with 3 outside solid walls and a concrete floor. Temp at 05.30 was 15, 07.00 when I left it was 19..

Heat loss from the house will be greater if the difference between the inside and outside temperature is high. With the number of air changes per hour in a poorly sealed old house, for me it works out more efficient to heat it only when required. My thermostat (Honeywell) has an optimum start function where it will reach target temperature at a certain time, so you program the times and temperatures rather than on-off times.

This is what I'm heating - with LPG, single glazed sash windows, open fireplaces, 1/3 of the ground floor is concrete. Boiler and radiators are good. It feels comfortable at 17.5C. Love the house and location, it does take heating though.

Just read your meter before and after for both scenarios if you really want to know.

My place stands similar to yours and needs more heating than peoples houses I visit on say an estate where other buildings surround them. Getting the place warm though is easy with a good system in a draught free house and maintaining the temperature is also easy enough.

In the summer my place stays a lot cooler and is much more comfortable than a house surrounded by others.

heating comes on at 6:15 - 8am @ 22C
then its all day till about 6pm at 14c (as we're not in)
then its on till 10:30pm @ 20.5C
during the night it' down to 7C

when we have the log burner going in the lounge temp of the room goes up to 22-23C, if the Stats in the lounge the heating then no on. so you go out the lounge and the rest of the house feels like an ice block, So we move the Stat into the Hall, then he temp in the rest of the house can go up back upto 20.5C

Under floor heating in th kitchen is set to 22C though as no radiators in there, UF heating come son at 6:15am-8am, then on at 6pm-8pm as those are the times we're most likely in th kitchen.

Nice house John - where is it?

Got a big house here - 5 beds with large rooms but it's wooden construction (see pic -edge of the house) which actually seems to keep the heat in really well.

We have a baby so need to keep warm but the central heating works a treat and the open fire just makes it all the more cosy.

We do get through oil quickly though!

Oh shes all over me, all the time !!!!!!!

When the wind blew it blew .Caravan was held down by wagon straps tethered to the concrete base ,stretched over the top to stop it getting blown out to sea .It must have been 20 yrs old and ricketty as hell .
Electric blanket on all night .Having a shower in winter was torture and you had to syke yourself up prior to getting in .
Them were the days .

May treat them over Xmas and put it upto 19 or so !!!!!!!!!

For me, "central heating" is that big yellow ball in the sky during the day, and it's pretty cool lately!
