Petrol or shell V-power in my new WRX Type RA?
#31
i have always used v power in my classics.
i doubt normal 97 super would do any harm though,
normal 95 is not suitable, espeically if you drive the car hard.
tesco 99 or v power are fine, use the cheapest of those two in your area.

V power --V-- Tesco
Gents, what I am about to say is not a myth but true.
My boss gave me a Which magazine to peruse so i could go buy us a new fridge at work and after being bored to death with them I went to move the brochure and stumbled across a double page spread on fuels from different garages and the Which tests of them.
How interesting it was.......
I cannot publish the same results here as it would be libellous to scoobynet but trust me when I say that the results PROVED that V Power was on average 99.6 RON and Tesco was on average 99 RON.
I wont go into the maths as I am too tired but if you are prepared to believe that 97 - 99 is a great step forward then imagine what a 30% increase on that increase would be.......
This is assuming that you use 97 RON and have chosen the 99 as a better fuel.
Please dont give me grief over this, go and find someone with the Which report or PM me and I may find a way of "explaining" it to you if you dont have access.
For what you may save in running costs, maybe you should subscribe to them to get the report......
And before anyone asks, I dont work for Which, just read stuff........

As the person who actually told SN that 100RON fuel wasnt widely available until the 1997MY cars were launched: Id like to add that only 220PS 'Wagons should be using 97RON. Other non-STI models need a minimum of 98RON. Pre-1997 STI & STI Type-RA models need 99RON and careful monitoring.

Obviously bear in mind this assumes the ECU hasn't been messed with. Which on an old car needs to be kept in mind. Also if someone who is reading this has a UK/EU spec car - its all different again, depending on year and model

why did they make the early stis (and there were a lot) run on a fuel which was harder to find?

so are you saying now then that only 98 ron and 99 ron was available pre 96, with some 100 ron about? and that in 97, 100 ron was widespread hence the 280bhp versions came out?

Also, not all STis are 280ps:
1994 Sti was 250ps
1995 RA-Sti was 275ps
Late 1996/early' 97 was finally when the 280ps varients were introduced (both WRX and STi)
