As most ISPs allocate them dynamically it would be pretty simple to circumvent. Of course if you're posting from work then it may be easier to spot the IP address but if you work for a big corporation there may be other employees who like SNet all posting from the same IP so what do you do then?

Each time such individuals set up a new account, all it does is make them look increasingly sad and foolish to be honest.
If they wish to waste their own time indulging in such behaviour, they have my pity, as much as anything else, but they can rest assured that as soon as their ID is revealed, we'll just sling them off the site again.
In the meantime, everyone can help us by reporting suspect alias accounts and not feeding the trolls as and when they emerge!

I have to add; (especially after last night) Don't expect an instant action after reporting an alias. Sometimes we may decide to investigate the user.
For example I spotted our foxy friend last night long before we recieved a user RTM. During this we gave that user the opertunity to admit (via PM) to their normal ID and reasoning to using the new ID.
Of course whilst this happened we had RTMs asking why nothing was being done; it was. Just it was behind the scenes, plus it was very clear we were aware of him, by us replying to his posts
The end outcome is the user didn't give us a good enough explaination as to who they were and could only be concluded as a trolling account and thus was banned.
The reasoning why action isn't always instant is simple; a) it allows us to fully confirm who it is. b) It gives the user a chance to redeam themselves and gives us a legimate reason for using a second account - and confirm their old account IDs (by PM if they want).
So just bear that in mind, somtimes we'll do it straight away, sometimes we'll hang fire.

My advice to COB would be to report the abuse he's had, and if he still has the PM's forward them on to Stu, so the Admin is aware of what user accounts sent the information, thus allowing them to be banned if things are as seemingly offensive as others have pointed out, we don't want people like that around here.
Forwarding the PM's could also allow the web team to look at the accounts and work out who, as in normal user account, these originated from, and thus if that account isn't banned, decide wether they should be banned for using a duplicate account to harass another user.

If only it was that simple we'd have done it, Chris! I'm not a techie, but I'm sure Stu or Kieran can explain the problems associated with this approach. We do have to be a bit careful though, lest we give the trolls info that they can use to try and circumvent the rules!
All we can do is make it hard for them and rely on you lot to report them.
Either that or make the new user process more time consuming and filtered, but then THIS might put off genuine users

How about like ebay now does....you have to provide a contact number for the address you register from to confirm it?
Although that isn't hard to get around either

Not having the ***** to deal with problems was the previous admins downfall (well: one of several).....

GC8 again, I'd personally love to, but -and I'm sure Kieran can elaborate on this- as I'm in no way an expert, we can't simply disclose such info for legal reasons.
There is no reason for you to get uptight about it mate, people who indulge in the behaviour you reference really condemn themselves with their conduct!
Some may find it funny (until the troll turns on them) the vast majority will just roll their eyes and think "what a prize plonker - there are so many better ways to spend one's time on the net than winding complete strangers up".
And you know what, they're right!
Enjoy SN and leave em to it; if they don't have an audience they go away, and if you report em to us they'll go away quicker!
We do have to investigate these things though; just banning people on the strength of one person's suspicions would be unfair and open doors to mistakes/abuse, as I'm sure you can appreciate.

Interesting thread
Funny how I see it. Sometimes on SN, anyone with a fast wit, tends to be classed as a bully, keyboard warrior etc. Even though in actual fact, they are not. They are just bloody funny.
As for the offensive pm's, that beggars belief that anyone can be that sad. I would love to see said pm'er, in a face off in the flesh with receiver. That would never happen, if they are so gutless that they have to resort to doing the deed in private.

Yes, one person's troll is another person's acerbic wit. Thank [insert preferred deity or other oath here] that the infraction system's out of the hands of the dimwits now.
