I had a 1998 sitting in the cupboard and it got drunk earlier this year, was superb.

I bought it in Calais in 1999 for about £15, same vineyard, same year I found two bottles on the web for £380 each!

Young CNDP is rarely as good as the older ones but to be fair to the big supermarkets they have incredible buying power and its a loss leader, the people who know its a good wine for £7 will almost always buy others on the same visit at the proper price.

Perfect job for fooling some snotty waiter. Go there in lorry driver gear, get nose turned up at you, bet the wine waiter you can identify a certain wine, win the bet, laugh at the waiter

Dad's mate, a very successful jeweller (but scruffy in appearance) did the same with a vintage port a while back - made the snotty waiter look really daft

I hate going to restaurants now to be honest as you can tell straight away when you are being lied to. I got to decant/taste some really nice wines and ports when I was at tylney hall as they had an exclusive wine club there.

lol @ zippy, wheres bungle?? oh hes over there go and look in the mirror

See my 1st post and then Shaggys response. There was no need for the ... 'if you say so mate..' bit, like I'm a complete novice.

I then posted a jokey reply but it didn't seem to hit the right spot.

Never mind, alot on here have no sense of humour.
obviously you included.

Have I upset you in a former life?

I only gave my opinion!

Furthest I have got to is a few wine tasting courses which I've really enjoyed.
No expert but know enough to have a bit of an idea what to look for. I also love matching food with the perfect wine - makes a good meal several times better.

Just had roast pheasant for lunch - chose a nice St Emillion and it went very well indeed. Good job I'm not driving again today though!

that was the hardest part of the job to be honest, people asking you for recommendations based on the meal they had ordered. everyones taste is different, it usually worked out ok though.

Some of my favourites:

Delicate(ish) tasting fish (turbot, bass, etc) - Sancerre
Joint of lamb with a robust sauce - CndP or similar
A good steak (Rib eye preferably) - a decent Rioja (Faustino V if they have it) or lightish Bordeaux
A well made fruit pie or crumble - Sauternes
A robust chicken dish - Chablis

So, Shaggy.
Which one do you think is best, where can I get it from and how much should I pay for a decent one?
Thanks.

I've just bought a bottle from Sainsburys as I needed one for tonight but I've paid £10.99 for it.

which one do I personally think is best? I am quite partial to a glass of gevrey chambertin its ideal for a meaty meal such as steak but don't over do it with the salt. if it was me I would try and get a 2003. cost? depends where you go as above but I would have though £30 to £40.

everyone is different taste wise, if you don't want to pay a lot of money try a chilean wine new world wines are great as they are cheap but the taste is great. try and find a wine called nomad, its a mix red wine, you should be looking for a 2004, expect to pay about £7 upwards, silly money for a fantastic tasting wine. if you dont like it cork it and use it for cooking

I remember when I used to be a snob firstly when corks went plastic and now we are on to screw caps!

Mind you, withe the plastic corks it seems to avoid that 'corking'.Gawd it smells bad when that happens.

Do the best wines still have cork corks?

I love sweet tasting things but could never stomach desert wines for some reason, I have tasted a few and can say hand on heart i've never had one that I liked.

its a long time since I worked in the hotel industry but I can tell you I can never remember seeing anything other than German wines with the plastic type "corks", its hardley an indication of a bad wine, im sure most of the better wine producers have tried them at some point as well as the benefits are obvious, but I cant imagine a nice bottle CnDP with a twist lid though can you?

A lot of quality new world wines now have screw tops but I'd say almost all decent classics still have proper corks.

I have never ever had a truly excellent wine with a plastic cork - no real indicator of quality but it's what I have observed.

Shaggy - I find nice floral and slightly metallic flavours cut through the sweetness and go well with a nice dessert. However only really Sauternes gets it right - lots are just sweet - yuck.

glad to see no one has mentioned their love of rose' yet anyway

I do remember once when I worked at the PG someone asked for a Rose' we didnt keep any, he was really insistant and a little rude so we said we could get him some if he didnt mind waiting 10 minutes. I mixed the nasty house white and red togeather and charged him £50 he was happy as a pig in poo. nothing like feeling special is there?

That sounds like one of Alan Pastor's personas! Shortly to be followed by his nacro persona challenging said cage-fighting persona to a duel and gloating about how the hapless fellow hid in his office, when Alan turned up ready to do battle in reception.....

That's it.
I thought it was £10.99 but having looked at the receipt it was £12.99.

So, I look forward to drinking it tomorrow.

They didn't seem to have any for £7.00 though.
