Off topic but that soundtrack to Gears of War 2 on the TV ad at the moment has really got me (sorry Mr Davies haha!) at the moment.
How about the bass riff to Dazed and Confused by Led Zeppelin?

There's a great but subtle riff going on in The Dope Show by Marilyn Manson
Yes...the Chilli Peppers (Flea) have quite a number of them...probably due to having a good bassist Give It Away, Naked In The Rain, the rumble on By The Way, All Around the World, Scar Tissue (my fave)
S o many good ones from them...

I vote for anything by Rush
also can anyone remember a band called 'Mr Big' if memory serves they had a very useful bass player
We are also forgeting the late, great Cliff Burton of Metallica - all of Master of Puppets/Ride the Lightning is bass riff heaven

Holy thread resurrection!
It's quite pertinent, actually, because JJ Burnel's "Peaches" bass riff has just been chosen as the best of all time by the readership of Bass Guitar magazine, or something.

Now I know the bass guitar might be the most overlooked of rock instruments, but there are a few memorable, nay iconic bass guitar "moments". My personal choices are:
1. Peaches -The Stranglers
2. The Chain- Fleetwood Mac
3. Two Tribes - Frankie goes to Hollywood
4. Intro to The Ace of Spades - Motorhead
5. Intro to No More Heroes - The Stranglers
Any more?

John Myung:
YouTube - Dream Theater - Panic Attack (Mike Portnoy)

Matt Bisonette.
YouTube - matt bissonette fretless bass solo WOW!
Alexis Sklarevski:

Amongst many many others......I would bore the **** out of you!

Pontificating
Too many to note
Agree with anything by Flea
What about The Beatles "Within You Without You" inspired so many drum and bass tracks, the original Drum and Bass

Janspeed, don't get upset. I just don't think they are iconic lines that have tattoed themselves onto the skin of rock 'n' roll -for a start, they're not hummable, are they? Technically impressive, but aren't they just a teeny bit widdly-widdly?
