Is the bass in "Al" not done on a sequencer rather than a "real" bass anyway?
If that's a real bass I'm very impressed by the player's skill.

No, as far as I recall from a programme I watched on the making of the Graceland album, the bass is actually played, but as I said, the first half of the solo is forwards and the second half is the same bit of recording flipped over so it plays in reverse. The line always freaked me out before I discovered this because I couldn't imagine the talent needed to play something so unique and original.

Just played the track on the CD and also had a look at the booklet. Baghiti Khumalo was the bass player responsible and everything points to him doing it without any electronic trickery.
I can only dream about that talent........

A quick glance at my iTunes library reveals these gems amongst many others:
Blitz - Never Surrender (old punks never die!)
Black Sabbath - Children of the Grave
Dr Feelgood - Roxette
Iggy & The Stooges - Dirt
Iggy & The Stooges - Little Doll
Joy Division - Twenty Four Hours
Joy Division - Day of the Lords
Korn - Bottled up inside (how heavy can that get?)
Machine Head - Days Turn Blue To Gray
Anthrax - Bring The Noise (with Public Enemy) - 'specially at the end!
Rage Against The Machine - Killing in the Name (surely the best riff ever?) +1
Rage Against The Machine - Bullet In The Head (another contender)
The Ruts - Jah War
System of a Down - Atwa
Thin Lizzy - Dancing in the Moonlight
Tool - Aenima
White Stripes - Seven Nation Army (the catchiest of them all?)
so many to choose from!

Don't know if it's been mentioned, but what about the bass break in the middle of Queen of the stone ages 'No one knows'
Also featuring some great drum solos from Dave Grohl of course.

Since the recorded version of Waterfront is considerably different from what they played live, and that change coincided with a change of bass player, I would suggest that John Giblin brought the Floyd influences
