I did the exact same thing mate.
I had a UK catalunya but wanted more power.
Went to an STI bottom end and VF35. P1 suspension and AP 4-pots
I recently fitted STI heads, 20G and a few other supporting mods.
Its now running 390BHP on v-power.
I have been constantly adding bits here and there to improve the car as I go.
I now have the car I wanted to keep with the spec I wanted.
I completely agree that it would have been cheaper to sell and buy an STI, but in many ways I am glad I did it the way I did. The car has grown with me and I still own my first scoob. I'ts also allowed me to learn:-
A) How to drive the car as it goes up in power levels
B) I have a much better understanding of the car as I have done alot of work myself and helped my mechanic where I could.
Thats my thoughts anyway.

Had someone suggested I buy a modified scooby from the ouset, I would have said "no way"
Now I'd know exactly what to look for, or at least the number of someone who did!
I've spent a fortune (relative to my humble means) on my car. Do I regret it? Nope!
Would I do it again? Nope! I'm keeping this car, and when I eventually have to buy another, I'm going for a modified STi!

Probably more like 7-8k to get your car up to 400bhp rather than 5, the 5 was just some parts you would need, even the clutch you have may not be sufficient and you will be replacing half the parts you already have... though the mica red cars are quite rare sometimes its better to try a different approach
Good luck anyway
