Regarding the life jackets, I think they may have been thrown over by the boats. Nobody seems to have them at first, then the later pictures show lots of yellow ones.
The captain of the second boat there (a 400-person ferry) and her crew took 24 people off. She said they'd always been doing drills for getting people out of the water - they'd trained for it. Brittany Catanzaro has been a captain for 5 months, and she's now 20...

I thought ferries carried a different sort of life jacket? Prob wrong but hey lol.
The ones just looked like the sort of thing you see demonstrated on a plane.
Either way, im sure they were happy to have them, and grateful to the well trained ferry

Thats what I was thinking. Could not even be at a ceremony today to receive honours as he was at a funeral reading a eulogy! Busy guy.
PS I still think they are the airline lifejackets, looking at all the pics, im sure

APU would still be running ok you would assume.
The A320 has a "ditch" mode, quite handy if you are going into a water landing. Would close up any intakes and such like and configure the plane/soon to be boat, so in theory not much water should come into the cabin.

I imagine that was a pretty much appreciated feature!

Amazing, top marks to all the crew ![Thumb](images/smilies/thumb.gif)
I do quite a bit of flying for work, and whenever they talk about "in the event of landing on water" in the safety brief I always thought no, this would not be a "landing", it would be a "crash", and would shortly be followed by some "death".
Well done to Airbus for desiging a plane that made a textbook ditch, with at least one of the engines shearing off (the other wing is still underwater
)
Against the usual opinion I always prefer to be on a FBW plane

From an engineer....
"Flight controls are powered by three systems. When both engine fail, only Blue system is operating - powered directly by RAT, providing power to move all primary flight controls in degraded mode and one out of five spoilers on each wing plus a little bit of movement of flaps. Also an emergency generator is powered by Blue hyd system. Flight ocntrol computers work in very degraded mode, but not sure if it is direct law or some protection is still retained - have to look in the books.
We were told that engine mounts on A-320 are designed to fail in case of ditching, shedding engines on the way."

Nat, because of the below freezing temps at the departure airport there is a strong chance that they took off with the APU running, so they would have had full control of the flight surfaces, and not been in direct law

Just been having a look at the flight reply here :
LaGuardia Airport - AirportMonitor - by Megadata - powered by PASSUR
Check out the screen at 15:29:03. Flight 1549 is only 500ft from N461SA which looks like it may have taken avoiding action.
This could have been a major tragedy.

Enter yesterdays date and start it at 15:25.
Then watch for 1549 departing to the NW, it'll be a green track. Then watch it as it turns to the south and follows the river.

This reminds me of some of the other examples of outstanding flying in the face of adversity. There is some element of luck in any accident but to keep a clear head and execute what he did was pure brilliance.
What really demonstrates the character of the guy is the fact he has avoided the limelight since. A true Hero, the world needs more people like him.

Here's a Coastguard video of the first moments after the plane hits the water: BBC NEWS | World | Americas | The moment plane dived into Hudson
The more I read about this, the more stunned and amazed I am

What a fantastic piece of news, at this time of doom and gloom a perfect antidote, plane crashes rarely have a happy outcome. Ok someone got two broken legs, but for New York that has three airliners hit buildings in the last ten years its light relief.
I did think about the environmental impact though, imagine the pollution caused by three or four Stewardesses in full makeup falling into the Hudson, it could be months before the scum of beige foundation is cleared up.

I wonder what will happen to the Plane, suspect its a write off due to the stress of landing on water and the water itself but I dont know much and these things cost millions.
