But you're right on prices. Big petrol cars are still falling, even if (as others claim on another thread) that prices have stabilised on most models. The RS4 dipped to £29k pre-Xmas and hit £27k a couple of weeks ago. Now £26k I notice on AT. I think it will be March before the season picks things up.
Richard.
Do like the RS4 though. Old man had one, and I would happily own one today.

You wouldn't think it looking at Audi's website. All still above £30k. For the same price as the average RS4 form an Audi dealer, you can get a 996 Turbo. OK, it'll be older, but I know which one I'll be buying in a few months time.

That's the kind of age and mileage you'll be looking at on a 996 turbo for RS4 money, plus the attendant risks. When push comes to shove, I seem to go all sensible and I wimped out of the 911.

911 Virgin has a lovely Silver one in
Sovereign cars have a Seal Grey one in.
Both around £35k with approx 35,000 miles. Same price as your average RS4.
The RS4 will be cheaper to run, maintain, service, warranty etc, but is likely to be a every day car, so petrol would be quite expensive.
996 Turbo will cost approx £2500/3000 per year just to sit in the Garage. Warranty, insurance, service. Add petrol, tyres (probably 4 every 6000 miles or so) and it does add up. But will only get used on weekends.

LOL Lover
And having taken another look, there's 996 Turbo just appeared, going for £27k. 02 plate with 107k miles, but it reads well. I've never seen one near that price before.
But the difference is, an RS4 for that price will be only 2-3 years old with a fraction of the miles. You should expect to do nothing more than feed it with fuel and tyres for the next few years. A 911 Turbo for that money is going to need some expensive maintenance to keep it going, just in terms of regular servicing, and is heading for the time when costly surprises should not really be surprising at all.

911 Virgin.com : 911 (996 model) Turbo, 6 speed manual Coupe
sovereign car sales : 911 TURBO - SUPERB EXAMPLE
No serious milage on these 2. Expensive repairs? Yeah, that's why I'll only buy one that been service/maintained at the Porsche main dealer, so I can get the £1350 warranty on it. Expensive? yes, but a brand new engine will be a hell of a lot more.
It would be a car I'd keep for a fair few years, unless the jump to a 997 Turbo didn't cost to much.
If that Seal Grey one is still for sale in a couple months, I'll make an offer.

Stilover - are you actually going to buy a 911T or just talk about buying one for months on end?
Until you do, I'm afraid I have this rather unfortunate picture of you in my head:
Now try and see the funny side okay...

No offence taken.
Yes, I plan to buy one, around Spring/summer time. Don't want to buy one now because:-
A) It's the middle of fecking winter
B) Don't have a Garage yet. Need to hire one across the road
C) Waiting to hear at work if we're succesful with a new contract. A couple years work, and guaranteed money/job.
I know what you're saying though. I used to work with a guy who talked everyday about buying a Skyline. That was 5 years ago. He still hasn't bought one.

Stilover - taken like a man!
TBH I have done similar things a few times (335d Touring, LR Defender, FQ360...!!).
Now I'm just going to post a pic when I change the car and not say a thing beforehand...

And there's more to buying used than just the (claimed ) mileage. Have a read here about buying and running an older 911. It's the Hartech site. Porsche servicing, repairs, reconditioned wishbones and cars for sale - near Bolton, North West England.
Some interesting thoughts on OPC warranties, too.
Richard.

Wrong. Have a look around, I have. Your average 2002/3 996 Turbo with approx 35,000 miles is now around the £32-35k from independents.
911 Virgin has a lovely Silver one in
Sovereign cars have a Seal Grey one in.
Both around £35k with approx 35,000 miles. Same price as your average RS4.

I'm well into my 2nd year of motoring with my RS4 and love it to bits.
Regarding power, NotoriousREV makes a good point, coming from a high spec'ed JDM STI I was disappointed with how quick it felt on the first proper drive until I looked at the speedo The engine is very linear and the speed is deceptive, the engine pulls all the way to 8,200 and things don’t really get going until 5k.
There is a lot of talk about them not hitting the figures claimed, with a lot of people putting it down to the 3 diffs it has and people not knowing how to cater for them. Eitherway its not slow!
As the values are dropping I will be keeping mine for a long while yet. There just isn't anything else available at present that comes close to all round style, comfort, pace and room. Build quality is also excellent and it still has the best cabin this side of 120k.
To celebrate mine is going in for some engine work and a remap in the coming weeks, I’m getting before and after rolling reads so will report back soon

To add, i got to london and back and retuned 29mph whilst maintaining a healthy crusing speed! Don't get me wrong, its not the most economical car but its not the worst either, and lets face it, anyone hanging round on this board doesn't put mpg's first!
Also just picked up 4 275/30/19s for under £500.
Oh, and a non res/non valved milltek is a must

Can I ask what brand/model tyres they were, and where from? That's half the price for decent rubber from BlackCircles! Was it a private sale? Well done on that anywayz.

Milltek: I was thinking the same thing, but the neighbours have started to drop in comments about how the car wakes them up in the morning when I go to work, and also when they can hear me coming home - and that's on the standard system. The worst bit is when it starts in a morning and runs at ~1500rpm for an age before dropping down.

How do you find the non res version ?
I'm running a resonated cat back pipe on my S4 and whilst it sounds awesome from the outside, its so addictive I'd like to hear a little more of it in the car.
I'm fitting a sports cat and downpipes in the next month too, so may wait to see how that improves things first
MPG for me averages at 20. (15mpg on the 10 mile commute)
I have seen 25mpg when cruising at 70-80, but that seems to drop back to 20-22 when sitting at 90

29mpg How the f00k did you manage that! My S4 is currently doing 23mpg, and the average since I bought it a week ago is 21.5mpg, according to the on-board computer. I've clogged it a bit, but I'm now certain that even 25mpg is just a dream

I was as amazed as you are! I reset the computer just as i left and checked when i returned home and there it was! i should add for both journeys i set off around 10pm so roads were quiet with no stoppages/traffic, just a heathly cruise level
Most of the time it returns 20-22ish mph with lots of round town included.
The tyres are Verdestein Ultrac Sasanta's and were 118 per corner. I'm just coming to the end of a set of Goodyear F1 assesmetrics which i got for £130 per corner. I have been very impressed with these
The 275 is an unpopular size so they are cheaper than say a 255 which is also on an M3.... the only problem is demand for the 275 has gone up so Goodyear have cottoned on and increased their prices on the F1.
The Sassanta is also meant to be very good and while they are so cheap it was rude not too by the way they were from tyreexpress.com who are excellent on price.
As for fitment. The 275/30 fits perfecting on the standard rims, whilst giving loads more rim protection and a better look to the car on top.
Regarding the non res milltek - i love it! Also glad i didn't get a res system as the car is so well sound deadened, i wouldn't be able to hear inside the cable as much as i would like otherwise. Only downside is a bit of drone around 1600-1900rpm which is cured by changing gear. Yes it loud for the first 20 seconds in the morning but i wouldn't go back
