Actually I better make that clearer.
If your coil packs are in the centre of the car then you have a phase 1.5 motor if they are off to the right (as you stand infront of the car looking back) then you have a phase 2 motor.
You could buy the block advertised but you'd be better off swapping the inlet manifold over. It can become a bit of a minefield.
If I was in your shoes, (I have been several times lol) I'd get my engine rebuilt properly for peace of mind.
I bought a second hand engine and that same thing happened to that after 5000 miles and i ended up doing a rebuild anyway.

If the car came here, I fully expect that we could fix it properly for the region of £1400.00 + VAT done and dusted.
BUT, that depends upon what the previous engine ' builder ' has done and I would be relying upon there not being too many things adrift that have been, can't say it any other way - bodged.
A NEW crank is circa £375 for that model, bearings are £160.00 for high quality tri metal, possibly one con rod, genuine STi gaskets and seals that should do it.
Then we'll put a warranty on the engine that is worth having and we all get on with the next things in our lives.
Grinding a crank is an absolute no-no on a Subaru and that is why it has failed again.
Good Luck, call me if you want a sensible, no obligation, chat John and we'll see what happens next.

Right ….
Spoken to the garage and it’s not particularly good news. Apparently the engine was only subject to a three month ‘verbal’ warranty [which in theory expired on 17/12/08] the short warranty was due to the fact the engine was fixed “as a favour on the cheap to allow the car to be sold on” [his words not mine].
I naively assumed it would have a 6 month warranty as a minimum.
I asked whether it was accepted practice to grind an Impreza crank and he said “I don’t know why not”. They get all their cranks reground by a local machine shop who advise any issues when grinding a crank. Also I asked him for a quote for a proper rebuild and he said “the last one we did was a P1 about three years ago”!! Doesn’t inspire much confidence!
The thing is my receipt from the seller states:
“The car is sold as seen except the work carried out by XXX XXX XXX [Subject to warranty]” … although at the point of sale 31/12/08 the warranty provided by the specialist had expired and the seller must have known this!! The seller has misrepresented the goods in my opinion.
Does anybody think I have any come back with the seller? Any advice? Should I speak to Citizens Advice? Should I request a contribution from the seller or have I not got a leg to stand on?

Thanks for the reply ... £1400 doesn't sound as bad as I thought [I understand it's subject to inspection]. If I do decide to repair/rebuild then I'll definetly want it doing properly this time!! I may be in touch shortly once I've weighed up my options.

legally speaking the warranty was between the previous owner and the garage so you won't have a comeback with the builders although it does sound like you're better off by having nothing more to do with them.
You've bought a car as a private sale and private sales have no protection with regard to statutory warranties.
I'm sorry to say mate I don't think you've got a prayer.
You best bet is to take the car to a reputable builder and get the engine rebuilt. You'll then have a car with a sound engine and enjoy many many miles in it.
David at API has got a fantastic reputation and you'll not go far wrong with him.
Hope you get it sorted fella.

So basically, someone with a failing engine took their car to mate to get it patched up so some poor soul (i.e. you) would take it off their hands and give them a sum of money commensurate with a car with a fit engine (i.e. way more than the car's actual condition warranted)? Pretty underhand thing to do to someone!
Second hand sold as seen, means I very much doubt you'll have any prospect of getting your money back, or any real help towards the cost of putting it right.
Sorry mate, best advice we can give now is tell you to take it somewhere good for a proper rebuild! Under no circumstances take it back to the garage who bodged the first job, thinking they can do it right if paid properly: they don't see the problem in regrinding a Subaru crank......that's all you need to know about them.
I'd be giving my money to APi! Get it sorted properly and start enjoying it!
All the best.

Having spoken to Trading Standards earlier today the only other factor is that the guy was actually selling 4/5 cars to try and make a profit. Trading standards have said that in the case the seller was actually acting as a trader and therefore the Sale of goods Act applies in this case and the car should be of ‘satisfactory quality’. However proving this would be more difficult.
The only option I can see is to phone the guy, explain the situation and see if offers any kind of resolution or contribution. Worth a try I suppose ... either that or get some legal advice but I’m not too keen on going down that route.
