You might understand why we used to do a lot of ducking when we were low flying. One of our squadron Canberras had a seagull strike in Germany and the bird went through the side of the fuselage all over the inside. They never got rid of the smell of rotting fish and we used to draw lots who flew it.

Poor birds.......or the blokes flying into them!

Had a guy in an A-7 a good few years ago that smacked into a seagull at low level, needless to say it was not good.

He somehow managed to survive a frontal impact, and landed the plane. He has permanent brain damage.

If you were sat on the right hand side of this plane looking out the window, I think you'd start praying pretty quickly.

Yes that is bad luck, it is very difficult to avoid a bird sometimes because you see it too late. Birds usually fly downwards when frightened by an aircraft but you can'#t guarantee it. I once had a large German eagle hit the front corner of my windscreen in a Canberra B(I)8 anr it smashed the outer screen which was pretty well bulletproof! If it had hit the centre I would not be around now for sure.

Amazing piece of film stilover.

That bloke in the A7 did well to land it.

I think he hit a seagull, and they seem to be "harder" than some birds (at speeds of 300-450 kts anything is hard!) think it has to do with their bones. They are very resistant.

With all of this what I mean is that, most of their flying was done over the sea and along the coatline and it is full of seagulls...........I flew a small prop plane once that had a siginificant dent on the leading edge of the wing and it had done a seagull at 90 kts!
