We need a change in the way these issue are dealt with and Obama has made a bold step in the right direction.
Time will tell if Obama will live up to the hype, he is a phenomenal public speaker though. However I wholeheartedly agree with your sentiment.

I think that Guantanamo is an evil blot on USA history. No country should be able to use that situation to enable their officers to commit torture and certainly not to imprison anyone without a fair trial. Our country is at fault by allowing rendition through our land by the USA as well.

There is a sacred law about having to be proved guilty. If it is not possible to do that then a man should not be imprisoned for suspicion alone. If that principle is allowed to go by the board then we are building up deep trouble for ourselves in the future.

The prisoners there should be given a fair trial and their treatment should be based on the results of that. The prison camp should be destroyed.

Not in this country , you can be imprisoned on remand for any number of offences awaiting trial if you are suspected of being guilty. Granted the evidence presented to put you there must be quite strong but people are still jailed before being proven guilty.

I'm glad to see a mix of opinions on here without the usual Snet infighting. I do believe Obama has made a mistake with this policy but i'll gladly be proven wrong and hope that I am.

The right to legal representation and a fair hearing goes right the way back to the Magna Carta. It is THE fundamental principle of English law.

The basic difference surely is "Habeas Corpus". We do still have that-just!

Just a thought as hate only breeds hate (and 'The West' has actually been out of line for many a century...). In fact, we actually invented slaves, imperialism, and colonialism...the others are merely impersonators

Step back...

well said, I might just pick up a copy myself

An attack carried out almost entirely by Saudis. So why didn't we invade them? Of course, part of the reason Al Quaeda hate the US is because it considers the US to have occupied Saudi Arabia. The Taliban support terrorists? True - but not as much as Syria, and we didn't invade them either.

its a view I suppose, just one that belongs in the dark ages

tbh i think your the one who's unaware, considering someone very close to him has come under fire whilst out there and i blieve is still there.

its very easy to judge whats going on thousands of miles away in your nice cozy room typing on your very safe keyboard.

very few people actually know, they see press reports and form an opinion, press reports are extreamly biast one way or the other.

what rubbish -- I am fully aware of then bravery of people fighting in Afganistan

but I am also fully aware of the terrible death toll on innocent civillians -- not just me either, even the British Army recoginise that Air Strikes, often killing women and children are not the way forward
