What comes after jobseeker's allowance?

Jods, what's the point of that comment?
This is a kid who has worked hard on very low wages, sometimes travelling long distances daily in order to learn a trade. He's now out of work due to the current economic climate.
He WANTS to work, and is deperately unhappy and becoming depressed over the fact that there are no jobs.
There are apparently 7 applicants for every job here...........recently one was offered in local government and got 200 applicants in an hour. There are none within a 50 mile radius in his trade, and yes, he's done the jobcentre, internet, papers and even yellow pages things.
Not everyone out of work is a dole scrounger you know.

Redundancy entitlement statutory rights: a guide for employees - BERR
You've been well shafted then. I'd seek some advice.
The amount of redundancy pay will be calculated as –
* 0.5 week’s pay for each full year of service where age during year less than 22
* 1.0 week’s pay for each full year of service where age during year is 22 or above, but less than 41
* 1.5 weeks’ pay for each full year of service where age during year is 41+
* 0.5 week’s pay for each full year of service where age during year less than 22
* 1.0 week’s pay for each full year of service where age during year is 22 or above, but less than 41
* 1.5 weeks’ pay for each full year of service where age during year is 41+

TT, tell your son to ask at the Jobcentre about any free training courses available, they are usually for the long term unemployed but if he is keen they may be prepared to bend the rules slightly. My brother's wife managed to do her HGV and then her ADR all through the JC, something she could never have afforded herself (she was told the limit for the HGV was three attempts but she failed each one and somehow wangled a fourth try and then passed).

I applied for the job you're referring to. Didn't get an interview, and asked for a call back re. feedback. Was told as well over 200 applicants for one post, the filtering process was harsh. I didn't get an interview as I had no I.T. quals. I'm now looking into doing an ECDL course at college.
Re. mortgage help. Asked about this at C.A.B. The new rules came into practise in Jan. '09. You now have to be on Jobseekers for 13 consecutive weeks to be entitled to interest only help with you mortgage. For someone like myself, tied to a long mortgage, this is helpful. Before this, it was 39 weeks, as folk were expected to recieve help from the mortgage protection insurance taken out.
Also, being on Jobseekers opens up many doors in comparison to other benefits (such as incapacity benefit or diability living allowance), in the sense many college courses are free, prescriptions are free etc. A lot of my spare time apart from doing my commission stuff and buying cheap cider and drugs, has been spent resarching things such as this.

i'm in the same boat,got made redundant just after xmas,just thought i'd clarify one point though,your mortgage payments get paid after 13 weeks now not what it used to be i.e 39 weeks!!

The current weekly limit is £330. From 2 February 2009 the weekly limit will increase to £350.

Unfortunately, even HGV drivers are being laid off around here: most are hauling steel or steel products, and the steel industry is on it's knees...........at least in the UK it is. In Holland THEIR part of the company have had NO redundancies, not even contractors, and in India, the parent company have started up three NEW blast-furnaces.
Am I right in thinking you are in Scunny?

But even so, if he is unemployed anyway he might as well add another string to his bow at no expense to himself, can't hurt any to have something extra on his CV and then when he does go for a job interview it would show he has been making effort.
