Its easy to say do it yourself on a car that’s work 3k, but if you have spent 20k, 30k, 40k etc then the idea doing work yourself seems a little crazy. Seem a lot to risk for the sake of a few hundred pounds ?

i would never buy a car thats been serviced by it's owner

i still would do it myself,, i dont do clutches any more though as its too much agg but simple stuff like brakes and oil service ill do

ill be getting a porsche next year and ill still be doing my own service,,, but then i also have a porsche specialist who i supply parts for

i enjoy working on my car some times,, though not all the time

i bought my own flat and i also paint it myself and fitted my own kitchen,, and thats worth alot more than a car is

It's not necessarily all about saving money. I get a great deal of satisfaction working on my own car, it can be stressful at times but the warm glow you get the first time you take it for a run more than makes up for it...although I'm not brave enough to map it myself

GINGE! and trails, i agree with both of you. Rcwhite, im prob gonna get slated for this but, im sure the word enthusiast kinda means your enthusiastic over your cars. i.e, you will do all you car that involves the running, modding of your car. im sorry but, some 1 that just drives a car and dont get there hands dirty is not an enthusiast. you just like cars!!
NOT SAYING ITS A BAD THING but.... im sure thats how it works.

i will not sit back and wait for the grilling.....

NO Grilling from me mate but i still dont agree

Imagine this scoobi-G. Me putting my 2006 spec C up for sale.

Buyer comes conversation goes " why is there no stamps in your log book mate

Me.

"Well mate proper enthusiast me love getting my fingers dirty its all about just having a go mate"

I am not saying a very good job cant be done by your every day entusiast but i like roger clarke servicing my car and i am %110 sure they do a very very good job. i am not a superstar or a mug i just like what i like.

Now lets be fair Scoobi-G This hole thread might have been a lot more smoother if it was not for your first post. Saying in a nut shell any one that spends there money on getting there car serviced is a superstar (has lots of money)
or a mug ( like's being taken for a ride)

I am sure icarus1859 is just rubbing u up the wrong way as u might have to others......

well when spending a bloody fortune buying it to begin with, I bought it from subaru. I've no intention of buying a sports car with no full dealer history or pedigree out of the small ads. likewise from someone who has home serviced it.

might be ok on car worth a few grand- its a different market.

as for servicing- I'm an ex mechanic and I cannot be arsed rolling around on the ground an being cold anymore. very happily sold all my welding gear for example a few yrs ago.

so a main dealer can do my scooby for me. I also think when selling it- it will make it much more desirable etc.

My car was worth £22,000 at one point ...... its now worth about £4,000 - it's the very same car with the very same servicing requirements.

I understand what you are saying .... but, anyone who is anyone, can spot a well cared for car if it's put in front of them - serviced by whoever.

Shouldn't you be driving a MG or a Rover ... be careful you don't scuff your leather elbow patches too!

Confused here

Do you peeps service your cars yourself because you don't trust anybody else to do it or because it cheaper...

I am looking for a Scooby at moment and must admit I am drawn to cars with FSSH..am I missing some thing..

I get mine serviced at a dealers because I dont know shiite about the internals.

Ive never claimed to be an enthusiast but I do love to drive my car

If you like to get your hands dirty and you have the skills to do it, then good on ya.

So are you saying that an enthusiast shouldnt pay anything and run their car into the ground? because that is what it looks like.
If your roof on your house needs replacing, are you going to do it?
If you need your boiler and all your radiators replacing, are you going to do it?
I go and buy a car, i maintain her because i am an enthusiast and enjoy the use of that vehicle, if i didnt maintain her then i wouldnt be an enthusiast, just a muppet with a car thats going to go bang.

the superstar thing is a general word meaning every one, like, mate, dudes, geezas, people.

Mugged off meaning, are you paying over the odds etc...

Its ok, your the one that's ended up looking like an ***
Now go and use a brain cell or 3, how many people live in terrace houses with a main road? can they really afford to get underneath a car with hgv's going by?
How many people are really mechanics on here? you have to remember that there are a multitude of jobs out in the world.
How would it look if everyone did their own servicing, can you prove your car was service regulary to the manufacturers recommendations?????
You basically came on here, said "i serviced my car for 17 quid, you lot are idiots because you pay someone else to do it".
