How many people are really mechanics on here? you have to remember that there are a multitude of jobs out in the world.
How would it look if everyone did their own servicing, can you prove your car was service regulary to the manufacturers recommendations?????
You basically came on here, said "i serviced my car for 17 quid, you lot are idiots because you pay someone else to do it".

Thats how i read it also, I think its time we moved on But to be honest i cant see it happening ..

lol, me neither; I ran company cars for years before buying my money pit...the last time I worked on a car was when I was 18 and I replaced the head gasket on my mkI XR2

I don't think you are a mug, I think its horses for courses...I seem to spend my days chasing people by mail and phone and in meetings; getting my hands dirty and actually achieving something is a welcome break

I'm an odd case Car is always serviced by a dealer. Pay £100 for the service, or suffer an extra £100 depreciation at sale time. I like to think I will be able to sell when the time comes (about 2 years ago )

However, any non-service work, brake discs and pads, exhaust, anti-roll bars, Neutral Position Switch, bulbs etc., I do myself, because I can't face paying main dealer prices.

Car maintenance is a hobby for me, but I don't enjoy plodding through the service schedule.

surely you cant get a full service for £100 from a dealer?parts alone would cost that at least. personally it would be good to get some stamps from a dealer but since I'm the first owner in the uk and there was no history from its time in japan ,i'm happier getting my hands dirty, and there really isn't anything technical or difficult about a service.

the condition of the car was enough to convince me it hadnt been abused

You have to pay for the parts whether you do a service or let a dealer loose on your car. £100 is the difference = labour.

ohhhhhh there's handbags out everywhere in here!!!!

anyways, spent a small fortune on my building my engine and still got more to go yet but i still do as much on the car as i can - even including recently doing all the bushes myself. It's not about saving money or not trusting the work done though. If it needs doing and it costs X pounds then that's how it is - that's part of owning a performance car. Equally, I wouldn't have work done on it by someone I didn't trust so that's a moot point anyway. I work on it myself and have always worked on all my cars since i could drive because i simply enjoy doing it (and am capable of doing most of it - do pay to have stuff done that i know i can't do though). That said, to be honest in the days of my first car though, it was more about avoiding a bill that came to more than the value of the car!

Resale value isn't really an issue to me since i'm not planning to sell it at any point in time but if circumstances change it'll be worth far more in parts anyway.

just got mine back after having a 20,000 mile service from a subaru approved garage, it cost £198 which i didnt think was bad considering i was quoted nearly £300 from an approved gargage which was around 10 miles away from where i just got mine done! Although they rang me to say i need new brake pads so i asked how much they would be and they said £550!! so i said ill get my own
