Yes, but a Cobra is not a Muscle Car, it's a sports car.

The Bel-Airs aren't muscle cars, either. They were ordinary sedans. The ones above would be street rods although the '63 is bordering on Kustom.

btw, I'm enjoying being a pedant.

what is the exact meaning of muscle car??

i found this info "Muscle car is a term used to refer to a variety of high performance automobiles. The term principally refers to American, Australian and to a lesser extent South African models. It generally describes a 2-door rear wheel drive mid-size car with a large, powerful V8 engine, and at an affordable price. Although opinions vary, it is generally accepted that classic muscle cars were produced in the late 1960s and early 1970s.Muscle cars were built for street use.

where does the corvette sit ?, muscle or not?

My definition is it anything with an engine too big and powerful for the chassis

And in hindsight the GT40 doesn't belong here; as it can handle the power.

Not.

Neither is the GT40, or the Celica. Personally I don't think the Z should be classed as a muscle car either.

Last edited by v8voodoo; 27 January 2009 at 06:27 PM. Reason: Changed my mind about the Cobra. They were a smaller engined roadster before Shelby sorted it.

The key factor here is "affordable". Muscle Cars were for Ordinary Joe Six-pack, not rich boys. So anything European with any handling finesse is right out

For example, in 1962 a Cobra was around $6000, a Corvette was $4000 and in 1964 a Mustang was around $2500. We're talking the difference between an Impreza and a 911 in modern terms

A muscle car is not simply a fast, RWD car. It's a specific term applied to a specific group of cars. They were cheap, 2 door coupes (or coupe-based convertibles) with a long hood/short deck style with a big V8 and no frills. So roadsters are out (Cobra), the Jap cars are out (not V8) and the Bentley is out (not cheap).
