How silly. Many will have, like my son, either BEEN to the jobcentre, or looked at the Jobcentre website.

And as for looking further afield, great idea, my lad can afford to go and work in London...............NOT. he can also afford to drive long distances daily for £7 an hour.........NOT!, £5 an hour less than he WAS getting as a TRAINED MAN

Now try and answer without being daft, there's a god lad

British Jobs for British people!!

Brits should get priorty, if there is insufficient skills then import foriegn labour.

Brown condemned these strikes, the spineless euro gobbler.

Would Sarcozy dare to condemn a strike? i don't think so!

Our government bows to all European regulations and pressure they are too damn complient.

F*Ck Brussels there are people losing their homes here!

Too true, so have i travelling as much as 6000 miles and away for 2 months at a time, no big deal, at least i am not being shot at.

do you think that only locals would get the jobs at the TOTAL refinery or would travel and possibly stay away for the work, the latter is more a more likely scenario

Plenty of people travel distances to work and stay away, not sure what you point is or just generalising to help keep tempers fraid, there's a word that covers that, begins with a 'T' and ends in roll')

DCI do you really believe there aren't enough UK workers with the skills or wiling to travel to do this work, no do not answer that you would need to be a complete cretin to believe that that is the case and you do not quite fit the bill

This is a lively discussion and i hope it does not get personal or insulting and get locked

Why is it other countries get away with flouting or bending laws and rules to suit themselves
Example the French deport those who they consider a threat (the likes of Abu Hansa) because they have an agreement with the country that they send them back to that the person will not be tortured, harmed or killed. The reality is that they do not give a stuff or care what happens and this rule bending allows them to do this - Damn right and sensible IMHO.

However, we Brits take it all to the letter and this is where it leads us. we cannot prioritise our own people over those from European counties when we are in thew worse financial mess in history. If there are skill gaps that UK people cannot fill then bring in the Europeans, learn from this and start some aprentichips to cover this in future.

This work going put of the country just leaves UK workers on the dole who could work this not claiming and putting money back into the UK economy.

It also means that the money that the UK workers would earn goes out of the country, well most of it. Even the accommodation is a hotel ship so not even any money to be had by local hotels.

This may be somewhat simplistic but works for me

Blah, blah, blah.... you're not exactly setting him a good example by ranting on without any basis

The FACT is that they (the Total contractors) are entitled to work anywhere in the UK. So what a few on here seem to be saying is that we (the UK) should ensure that all jobs are offered to British workers first, then if they can't be filled offered to our European allies.... But we (UK workers) have equal rights overseas.....

FFS.... and you think I'm trolling

They weren't, the tender for the work was won by an outside contractor and the delivery strategy and scope of work involved using onsite support by a specialist overseas contractor, rather than yocal's from the surrounding fields.

Think you will find that the Italian contractor is using foreign agency workers not specialist contractors it as on its books .

Very evocative language, how odd...

even though thr contract was won by an overseas contractor then why not use local skilled labour? if not using UK labour then this is the case then this is discrimination and it could be the thin end of the wedge for a lot of jobs and workers in the UK
or
Are you claiming that we do not have right skilled workers in this country who can do the work, no-one skilled to do this, do you know this as fact???

I think you will find that those who work on these sites for shut downs work overs and construction travel all over the UK.We don't expect to get a job in our own back yard but when the do come up it is nice and does make a change.I for one have all my work gear packed and ready to go if a job comes up anywhere in the UK be it on or off shore.

I also hear that Acas are now looking into the situation at LOR to see if any rules were broken in the way this tender was won.

So the work is not skilled towards any paerticular country and there are Brits who could and would do the job (like yourself) then.

so no reasons not to use skilled uk crew by the overseas company then, job done

Why are you defending foreign workers and putting down UK workers. Most are just honest, hardworking people who want to earn a living. Do you not think if the tables were turned French and Italian workers would put up with it. I doubt it.
What experience have you got of foreign workers.

I have worked with all kinds of people and while you get good staff from every country there is a very clear difference between the work ethic of eastern Eurpoeans and the British at the minimum wage end of the job market. The issue here is that no English workers even had the chance to apply for these jobs and that sends a dangerous precident.
What happens if Tesco for example decided to outsource all their Logistics to a company that used cut price EU staff, all the UK workers would lose a job as even with the agnecys fee it would be cheaper than paying UK rates. On the other hand we are committed to a free labour market so eventually this market will find its feet and there will in theory be the same wage expectation in any country in Europe.

Its about bloody time people of this country stood up and made themselves heard! We are a country of moaners and it has resulted in this country going down the sh1tter. Its time to start telling our useless government that enough is enough and if it means people have to demonstrate or strike to make things change then bring it on

You are a disgrace. WHERE did I say that the jobs should be offered to UK workers first? They were NOT offered at ALL, in fact UK workers were STOPPED from applying.

Idiot!

Two points.

1. I too have, and still do work with Eastern Europeans. We sacked one recently for using drugs at work, another for stealing. They are not all they are made out to be.

2. There is a local employment agency that only employs Poles (cant be legal) and they do all hours for basic time. This means an erosion of double time for UK agencies on Sundays. Its crap.

Dont get me started on people from the middle east. Persecution complex or what. Everything you ask them to do its like you are picking on them.

As i said, i'll take a good UK worker over anyone. I manage staff on 16k per year (not exactly the highest paid) and you'll struggle to find a better bunch of lads anywhere. Of course a lot depends on how you treat them.

An Israeli doctor said "medicine in my country is so advanced , we can take a kidney out of one person, put it in another and have him looking for work in 6 weeks"
German doctor said "That's nothing, we can take a lung from one person, put it in another and have him looking for work in 4 weeks"
The English doctor said "Hah, we can take an ar$ehole from Scotland, put him in 10 Downing Street and have half the f*cking country looking for work in 24 hours!!"
