I didn't write it well .... what I meant was that a loud exhaust, on its own, can spook the horses - and when one spooks the others do too!
AND a loud exhaust is generally attached to a car driven by a boy racer or rally wannabbee ..... add a horse in the mix and you have the possibility of a nasty accident - nowt to do whether the horses are two abreast, they are still just the width of a car.
There could also be two abreast OAPs on their Electric Scooters ..... truth is, drivers need to slow down on country lanes and think of others instead of themselves.

How about, instead of telling all the car drivers in the world to watch out for horses. Why not tell the horse riders to stay in single file.
Dont remember ever seeing an ad campaign on tv advising horse riders about how to ride safely. Annoys me that the motorist is always the one who has to be on the look out for idiots who put themselves in danger.

I see no problem at all with 2 MTB chatting to each other as they enjoy their outdoor activity ......
What we need is a change in attitude, a change in speeding along country lanes and an empathy for those who happen to be sharing the same piece of tarmac for a moment in time.

Right, im in somewhat a rather unique position being a car enthusiast, an avid mtb'er or was until my frame broke and i used to go on regular hacks with the local riding school with a very chilled out hannervarian called baron.
It takes quite a bit of ***** and not to mention training to ride a horse comfortably so in a way they have had more hands on training than your typical car driver so i do give them respect and a wide berth when necessary and most have been nice about the whole matter.
They don't want to intentionally hold the road up hell they'd rather be off it but needs must and bridleways do indeed intersect main roads on the odd occasion, i have been fortunate in that drivers downn here have been decent though it was a largish group we all rode single file apart from the instructors who kept an eye on things.
Insurance imo for road riding should be a necessity and maybe take some sort of competency test before riding out on their own, however a tax is just plain wrong they're just animals after all and were about long before us.
I do however have no patience for toffee nosed horsey types who do think they own the road, id gladly give them both barrels.
There's a local trail called the portreath tram line and it's a great stretch and runs right to devoran and beyond, all horse riders have all been decent bar one, i was pedalling slowly and she gave me a right bollocking, she never expected me to mention lack of hi vis gear or red tags to show it's a kicker, she swiftly shut up as she didn't expect a bike rider to be a fellow horse rider.
Anyway she's known to the area for being a royal pita, tried to get the council involved to kick bikes off the biggest trail in cornwall.
I mean what possesses such numpties to take a spookable horse on such a busy trail, i have no patience for such people.
So i guess what im saying is that we should all have at least a small bit of tolerance for each others interests as i know what it's like to be sat on a mobile glue factory.

Of course we all know the real true outdoor scum are pedestrians. This is especially true of the 'senses deprived' i pod wearing type who regularly step out in front of me on my cycle to work. Ohh and why can they not just keep left on trails rather than meander or jog at you when your are keeping left (a cunning ploy of mine designed so as we all know where we are and hence dont have to guess which side to pass)?
Actually the true low life scum out there are.......DOGS! They are all over the b place. NO consideration for a man trying to get to work on a bike and darting about all over the place as if they've never been out before! Impossible to predict where they end up - this is why cleverer men than me invented LEADS!
In fact, I guess, we are ALL pretty much rubbish and should stay indoors safely with our animals! There, the truth be known!!!

I would ask that YOU get up on a horse, take it onto the road and see what a terrifying place it is when you get the odd 4rsehole thinking he/she has every right to speed around the country lanes!!
Personally, I am too scared to do it ...... but, come on, cut them some slack and give them some consideration for the few seconds it takes to pass!

I don't see roads a place for leisure activities, i use it for commuting thus Horses are nothing but another annoyance stopping me from reaching where i'm going on time.
Horses belong in fields, you don't see me making shortcuts thru fields so i don't expect to see horses on my roads.

Firstly, I don't worry about the horse but the rider on said horse - to not see that there could be a child on the horse shows a complete lack of skill.
Secondly, Horses were on the roads long before cars!
Yes, I hate horse boxes - quite why they need to go at 20 MPH bewilders me.

Secondly the last time i checked it was 2009 not 1889 so horses no longer are needed on the road for anything over than recreational needs.

You're right, its not. I worked for a garage (franchised) and the back road seemed to attact a couple of horse riders which ran right passed the front door and entrance to the customer carpark.
I lost count the number of times the horse decided to **** in the road and then it smeared all over, including the pavement where cars had spread it getting into the carpark.
I did say not to get me started lol
