some cars pass static but can fail on driveby's (on track meters) and also vice versa. if you ask for a test before the trackday they normally do a driveby, if they possibly can
Passing a static on the day is a starting guide, fail the driveby and your off
IIRC they have two on track noise meters, one on dunlop bridge and other on pit gantry. My Miltek is quite loud on the button it passed 98db short shifting but got bored registered 102db @ dunlop and black flagged.
BTW IIRC every 3 db, the noise is twice as loud, so 98bd-105db is quite a jump
IMHO IIRC

The Dunlop Bridge has now been dismantled, though I am sure the noise meter will have been relocated somewhere nearby.
As far as I am aware the other one is on the gantry with the clock on it.
We have found that a flap of metal above the exhausts that in effect direct the noise downwards helps prevent our race car tripping the meter on the drive by. Might not be so practical to fit on a road car but might be useful for some who don't want the expense of a bung.

db is normally considered SPL un-weighted pressure. unless stated db SIL. "p"= sound pressure = sound field quantity and "I"= sound intensity = sound energy quantity
98db (SPL) = 1.588656469 Pa
101db (SPL) = 2.244036909 Pa
1 Pa = 1 Pascal = 1 N/m2. and The reference sound pressure is p0 = 20 µPa = 2 × 10−5 Pa. Then If sound pressure 1Pa = 93.9794db SPL is doubled to 2Pa = 100db SPL. Which is directly Proportional and Pressure doubles at 6.0206 db SPL
I asume your refeing to is db A (weighted pressure)
The weighted system (Frigged) db A, The reason for measuring sound this way is that our ears and minds, perceive sound in terms of the logarithm of the sound pressure, rather than than "actual" sound pressure.
Which very much like you said Meaning if you double the sound pressure the index increases by approximately 3. A sound level of 100 dB(A) thus contains twice the energy of a sound level of 97 dB(A). Genrally reckoned that if you increase the dB(A) by 9-10, you double the "subjective" loudness.
As Phil said 105db A is a lot louder than 98db A

Donnington Park
Yes it's true - we have a trackday at Donington on Saturday 11th April!
The details are exactly what you'd expect;
- National circuit
- 105dba noise limit
- open pit lane
- free instruction
- Protyre tyre support,etc
The only difference is the price and time it runs; 2pm to 7pm, which means you don't have to get up at the crack of dawn ... Signing on is from 12pm so you get a full 5 hours driving.
The price is only £119
The trackday runs alongside the ISTS Show and all bookings will also recieve one free entry into the Show for the Driver, so if you want to arrive early (and nab one of the 10 garages we've been allocated) you can look round the Show too. Passengers will have to pay to enter the Show.
Trackday timetable:
- 12:30 - Driver & passenger sign on
- 13:30 - Briefing
- 14:00 - Sighting laps and tracktime
- 19:00 - Close
Places are limited and available to members of the SIDC, MLR and GTROC
