I'm having the same problem, I like cats too but I don't want their little presents all over my garden!
Tried the Spray repellant, that did'nt work so I bought these what only can be described as garlicy granules..they stank, I did'nt really hang around to see if they worked!
Bought a sonic repeller from a garden centre after that and was gutted to see the next day a cat sat with it's head cocked to one side "admiring" it!
So I now am back to square one, someone told me orange peel in the flower beds will do it, but i'm loathed the start eating oranges and leaving the peel all over my garden!

my jack russel used to do the same despite living with cats, my newer pointer can catch them in the garden but tries to retrieve them absolutely comical and they don't tend to come back.
But what more can you want its a natural form of cat protection so entirely eco friendly and carbon neutral

Get a Super Soaker water pistol. Fill it with water and put a load of chilli powder in it.
Next time that a cat comes visiting, give it a blast from the water pistol. The cat will lick the water off and be quite happy. However, the next time it goes to lick its ringpiece it will discover why getting sprayed by a Super Soaker isn't a good idea.
Problem solved!
