BMW, Ultimate driving machine?

I can understand that one - I had a 306 dturbo once. For 3 weeks in which it broke down twice. I HATED that car for all of the 3 weeks of ownership. 1st class walking is better than 3rd class travel anyday.

A lot of problems with modern RWS cars come from the Traction control systems. You simply can't drive them in snow with the systems turned on.
Ditto ABS.
None of the RWD cars i sucessfully drove in snow had any sort of Traction control or ESP systems and they were a lot better for it
Saxo, i think you're right about the FR layout and light weight being a lot more tricky. All lightweight roadsters like S2000, MX5 etc are probablly the same in such conditions...
The SMG would be a nightmare too i'd imagine.

This 911 seems quite at home in the snow....

Our £5.5k Jimny copes better in snow than probably any other car.
4x4, light. "proper" low ratio box, no silly electronics, simple. The Scandies love 'em.
Only 4WD car I have had (the R32) was a bit cack in the snow. Still loved it though.

Funny thread. What do you expect from a BMW? Its got near 50 50 wieght distribution which makes it fantastic to drive in anything but snow where obviously a car with 80% of its weight stuck over the front end is going to perform better.
I just dont take the BM out in the snow not worth the hassle.
ps no snow at all in belfast (so far)
pps SMG would be useless in the snow.

Oxford airport?
I did engineering work (used to be a Geotec engineer) at a couple of small airports and noticed most of the businesses based there had very nice motors parked outside!

just a couple of points.
911's have the engine sitting over the driven wheels which should help with traction if going by an old workm8 who had an ancient rear engined skoda who said it was brilliant in the snow.
theres alot of hear say about what you should do to when driving in snow.
for example 1 side of the coin will say use narrow tyres so theres more pressure between tyre and snow...the other side will say no use wide tyres as they offer more grip due to surface contact and then theres the ones who say deflate your tyres to get more contact area!!!!
also just a sugestion but if a rwd drive car is undriveable in the snow i.e. it cant make it up the hill to where you live could you not turn the traction control or stability system off as it might be hindering you by cutting in all the time and stopping you from getting anywhere????
i remember racing a citroen ax in the wet and its skinny tyres must of helped it out handle me in the 5gtturbo.as i couldnt go any faster round the corner without going straight ahead.
my brothers accord type r with lsd seemed very good climbing up the hill to where i lived in the slippery frozen road.

Most cars are poor in the snow.RWD even more so.
The only surprising revelation I have had during this horrendous time of 2 whole inches of snow was from my friend who was cursing his BMW X5.

Been there and done this, I have an M3 SMG and got stuck on a very slight slope, had the joy of watching several old dears drive past me in little FWD hatches.
My Renault Laguna diesel estate is far better - god I feel old saying that.

My BM is garbage in the snow. No matter how I drive it it's got rubbish traction & does not stop. The run flats are not good at the best of times which does not help.
Wife's Octavia VRs is much better and perfectly drivable.
I know everyone is quick to point out it's the BMW driver that's at fault etc etc but it's the only car I have ever struggled with in bad weather
- utter crap!

theres snow and theres snow, driving in a couple of inches is one thing, we had 8" on the road this morning and I could have done with a ferrrari going first as I can Imagine the snow plough effect from the lack of clearance on the front spoiler must be quite good. As it was had to take the 4x4 and just drive through it uncleared

because the engine is sitting over the rear wheels giving better traction to the driven wheels its a no brainer lol!!!!
thats why normal rwd cars are a night mare in freezing/snowing conditions theres no weight sitting over the rear wheels!!
