What a ***. I bet when there is a wisp of mist/fog your one of these people that slow to a snail's pace and stick your rear fog light on when you can still half mile ahead of you.
I went out today in the scooby and found people on dual carriageway doing 30mph on a road that was drying out.
FFS get a grip. no wonder this country comes to a stand still when there is a little snow with people like you behind the wheel.

ummm no i'm not so it shows you obviously have the mentality of the average scoobynet user who thinks he's gods gift because he's got awd and can drive in any conditions the same as when it's dry.
get a grip, on that day in particular the conditions were awful and people should be driving to the conditions i.e slowly not overtaking people and thinking it's big.
what if someone just suddenly appeared whilst you were overtaking in the ice came out of a side road say because they slid on ice you got no where to go except straight in to the nearside rear door right where little johnny is sitting hope you can explain to his mum and dad that you killed him because you could drive faster than everyone else in the snow and it's really clever to do so.
what a *** i can't believe you got the brain power to keep on breathing!

I had BMW's overtaking me on a dual carridgeway - I was doing 20-30mph and they were flying past about 50-60 on new snow!
remember the slogan......
BMW - The ultimate driving machine....
just dont take them out on snow! - I lost count the number of BMW's and Merc's that were wheel spinning all over the place!

No wonder European countries are laughing at us. As I said, I just got on with it.

My impreza only has 16" wheels (205/50/16) so the rubber is not that wide, wider than my yaris 185, but my dad with his WRX with 215 had no problems at all.
A good few years ago, when we had lots of snow, my dad was coming home from work (Redbourn to Harpenden) and there is a big long hill (B487) and my dad was just over taking cars when they stopped in front of him as they where spinning their wheels trying furiously to get traction. One guy who was helping push cars up the hill, said thats the car to be in. Please, lets not forget this is what Subarus are made for, its how they made their name - different road conditions - If you are not an idiot you can drive safely on all of them without fuss.
But what I am leading to think is that all you on here that are saying I am a fool, idiot, stupid for doing what I did on Friday, over taking in the snow have some sort of problem and are scared and unfamiliar with the benefits of AWD. If you are, just go out to a deserted car park, and have a play. It is the only way you will learn. Just be gentle on the throttle, using 3rd and 4th gears, easy on the brakes, even with ABS. Once you are moving in a straight line on snow, you want to keep moving and not stopping, just because of the guy in front can't move, can't gain traction which is exactly what I did.
Now please lets leave it there and not start WWIII

Subaru's were not made for snow with summer tyres fitted thats the entire point, your tread gets filled with snow making them into virtual slick tyres, but you do get the initial grip, people with fwd cars need to learn how to use gears, its as simple as that, and you will find that a pug 106 diesel with its 175 tyres will leave you in snow with chains fitted (even without chains fitted) if driven correctly for the conditions.
The point being made is that you didnt consider all the options, its not about overtaking but its overtaking at a speed that was not suitable for the conditions, your tyres and the vehicles you were passing, just one dab on the brakes could have slid you into the cars you were passing at 25mph, pass them at 10-15mph all you want which is a more suitable speed.
Just dont fall into the category of thinking that because it has awd its better, its not, it puts you into a sense of false security in certain conditions (though it is better in rain with summer tyres on )

Well I learnt that the car not to have in these conditions was a Pug 308 on 17" rims with whatever OE tyres they stick on at the factory.
I had the misfortune of driving from Norfolk to Bristol on Friday in this hire car, and it just would not shift on anything that even hinted at being slippery. Indeed, getting out of the hotel car park was a 20 minute challenge. High gear, low gear - didn't make any difference. What with the anti-stall anti-wheelspin engine management, it was a nightmare trying to get the thing moving from a complete stand. I even got stuck while trying to cross some ruts at a cross roads!!
It was a relief to get back into my scoob and have a predictable amout of traction, with a throttle connected by a cable!

Sounded like a safe manouver to me, I was driving my lorry in the Northamptonshire area on Friday and conditions were soft melting snow, water with an underlying amount of packed snow which was only partially affected by the salt. Generally I found car drivers sticking to around 15-20mph when up to 30 with good distance from the car in front would have been safe. The Impreza would have been safe in these conditions

I've been out and about in the Impreza in the snow all this week (mainly to ferry people about who couldn't get their cars out or to pull their cars out of the snow!), and have been extremely impressed with the way it behaved in the conditions.
To be honest, I tend to drive quite defensively even in normal conditions, so it was just a case of keeping my sensible head on and not taking any risks. I got the occasional unwanted slide when driving through some of the villages round here, but nothing too dramatic.
I think I love my Scoob even more now!

All this snow is just the subject of media hype and all you southern softies. To us lot in the north, we just carry on as normal wearing our cloth caps with our whippets and keeping our strength up chewing on lumps of stale Hovis.
Makes me laugh when the media and all these old fossells rant on about how the councils are ill prepared with not enough gritters etc, even though it only snows every ten years. We can't expect to be prepared like some countries where it snows heavily every winter, imagine how mutch that would cost at the expense of other services.
I don't go out in my Imprexa in bad snow cos with running costs are high enough, can't afford to have some numpty taking the side out of my car in a blizzard.
But anyone who does, your all heroes.
